WinZip has long been a go-to ZIP tool, so we were keen to try the all-new WinZip 18. It's much more than a cosmetic upgrade: A new compression engine zips, splits, and joins files faster than legacy versions, though of course WinZip still handles virtually any archive file type. It converts files to PDFs, adds watermarks, resizes photos, manages archives, and protects files with 128/256 bit encryption. Improved cloud navigation smoothly integrates WinZip with many more cloud services, including Box, Dropbox, SugarSync, SkyDrive, and Google Drive. Cloud Links adds links to files via e-mail, IM, and social media. … Read more
Upon first launching the app, you're immediately given the option to use a demo photo. The demo photos are portraits of individuals who may have exposed blemishes, hair on their faces, freckles or some other attribute that can be removed through the app.
I suggest starting with a demo photo, as it gives you a … Read more
Twitter users are posting an average of 500 million tweets a day, and many of those contain photos and videos.
As part of a new software update for its app on Android and iPhone, as well as to its Web site, the company says it's made media "more visual and more engaging" for those tweets with previews that show up underneath.
These images (or short video snippets from Vine) now pop up just below images instead of a link that users previously needed to tap within the company's official app. In practice, it looks like this: … Read more
Yesterday's flash-drive giveaway met with some skepticism, and in hindsight I agree it was a little too much hoop-jumping for too little reward. That said, I still think cashback services are the bomb, and I hope you're able to put TopCashback or an equivalent to good use.
Today, I've rounded up some freebies that don't involve driving anywhere* or waiting on rebates. So keep that credit card in your wallet and read on!
*OK, one of the freebies does involve a trip to your local Target. But you were headed there anyway, right?

Nine percent of cell phone users in the US use Snapchat, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center's Internet Project.
The finding explains why investors are seemingly tripping over themselves to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into the 2-year-old app for exchanging impermanent messages. The discovery, however, is only partially telling of Snapchat's true popularity as Pew surveyed US adults 18 and up, and the app is known to have a large following among tweens and teens.
"Mobile apps like Instagram and Snapchat have capitalized on user bases equipped and eager to capture … Read more
Bolle Photo Plus is a companion app for Bolle printers -- dockable printers for iPhones and iPod Touches that allow you to print your photos directly from an app interface. While iOS has long since integrated AirPrint as a major feature, allowing you to print wirelessly from an iOS device, those without a Wi-Fi enabled printer or who have an older iOS device can still benefit from a Bolle printer and the app works well for that.
When you open the app, you can choose to load an image, and the app will allow you to load multiple images at … Read more
My Photo Sizer is a companion app to convert your images into button- and bracelet-ready images that can then be exported to your camera roll or e-mail, or that can be printed at Walgreens. It runs quickly and offers a couple of useful tools but the options are very limited and it could use some more user direction.
When you open the app, you have three options -- bracelet, button, or purchase. The latter takes you to a Web link for the company's accessory creation products. The former two options allow you to import and convert images for use … Read more
DxO Labs announced its new Optics Pro 9 software Wednesday, an update the company believes does a better job stripping out noise than rivals such as Adobe Photoshop and Apple Aperture.
The software's Probabilistic Raw Image Enhancement, or Prime, takes more time than other noise-reduction algorithms, but it can detect finer details and accurate color amidst the noise speckles that afflict digital photos taken at high ISO sensitivity settings. DxO said the technology goes a full stop beyond the competition, meaning that it could cut noise from a photo taken at ISO 12,800 as well as a rival … Read more
Giving the smartphone market an option that's been successful in attracting photo enthusiasts to higher-end cameras, Nokia's new Lumia 1520 phablet can take photos in raw image formats. The Lumia 1020 will get raw support next year, too.
Juha Alakarhu, head of camera technology for Nokia, announced the feature in a tweet Tuesday, saying Nokia will use Adobe Systems' DNG (Digital Negative) format for raw photos.
"It will be available for 1520 from the beginning and 1020 with the Black [software] update early next year," he said in a follow-up tweet.
Raw photos record data from … Read more
