HBO launches Netflix rival

Pay-TV juggernaut HBO has officially announced the launch of HBO Go, a video-streaming service.

Unless you are one of the 38 million cable subscribers who gets HBO or sister service Cinemax, HBO Go won't be offered to you, the company has said.

HBO Go provides subscribers Web access to the same movies HBO screens on cable TV--at no extra charge. This is the on-demand movie provider's attempt to hang on to subscribers during a down economy, as Netflix and other Web video services attract more and more consumers looking to reduce entertainment costs.

The new streaming service is … Read more

Waiter fired for twittering about celebs

It is not easy to feed the egos of Hollywood celebrities. It is not even easy to merely feed their intestines.

This seems to be the conclusion one reaches from the story of Jon-Barrett Ingels, waiter to the stars. Well, now former waiter to the stars.

You see, Ingels was merely an extra in the vast set that is Beverly Hills. He would be still or sparkling, depending on his audience. And occasionally, he would turn his Twitter account into a diary of how hard it was to make his daily bread.

Stalk your favorite TV characters (legally) with Whrrl

Location-based social network Whrrl has forged a rather odd partnership with content provider HBO to place various fictional characters from the show Entourage as real users on its network.

Events from the television show will end up as annotated items on Whrrl's user-generated map. You can subscribe to whichever of the characters you want, and each of their items go into your central friends feed along with regular users who are providing "real" ratings and locational bookmarks. As the series progresses, locations seen on the show will continue to be placed on the map.

HBO invests in Will Ferrell's FunnyorDie.com

HBO has taken a small stake in the online comedy site FunnyorDie.com, Variety has reported.

The two-year-old site is backed by comedian Will Ferrell, along with Adam McKay and Chris Henchy. The Web site also has the backing of Sequoia Capital.

The deal with HBO, a division of Time Warner, also calls for the site to produce 10 half-hours of programming, Variety said.

The programming could range from a "funny, offbeat talk show to a maybe more-traditional-type sitcom to a show with puppets," Ferrell told the paper.
