Garmin and Asus to show off Nuvifones

This was originally published at ZDNet's Between the Lines.

Garmin and Asus next week will show off two Nuvifones--smartphones with a GPS twist--but the larger question is whether pro-consumers will buy it.

Garmin-Asus is a co-branded partnership with Garmin and Asus parent Asustek Computer. The duo will show off the Nuvifone G60 and M20 at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week.

Here's a look at the G60:

The photos look intriguing, but I can't get past a few realities:

• The economy stinks; • The smartphone market is crowded; • The Nuvifone runs on Windows Mobile and … Read more

LogMeIn Rescue+Mobile now for Andriod--but why?

Added more details 2/12/09 at 10:15 AM PT.

Few see Google Android in its current state as a serious platform for business users. Like the iPhone, it launched without support for the Microsoft Exchange, so there's no native support for syncing to your Outlook calendar and contacts. Android also lacked a lot of native productivity tools to edit online and attached documents, a key collaboration requirement.

Yet this week, LogMeIn announced a version of its remote maintenance software for corporate IT teams and carriers that can support the Android platform. LogMeIn Rescue+Mobile downloads a small … Read more

Modu unveils new jackets

You remember Modu? That's the Israeli company that makes the tiny modular cell phone that we first saw at last year's GSMA World Congress. The concept is simple: insert the Modu into one of several "jackets" and it becomes a fully functional phone with real controls. Each jacket, which is really just a handset shell, will bring a different design and feature set. You can change them at will to match your mood and needs.

Well, just to show you that's it's really not vaporware, the company will be showing four new jackets next … Read more

Barcelona bound: GSMA 2009 preview

In just a couple of days, a few of us lucky CNET folk, including myself, Kent German, CNET News's Maggie Reardon, and CNET TV's Ariel Nunez, will be boarding a jet plane to head to Barcelona, Spain, for the 2009 GSMA Mobile World Congress (MWC) show.

This is where the cell phone industry converges every year to discuss and showcase the latest GSM technologies and developments, and over the years, it's become the place where handset manufacturers reveal their new models for the year.

Just take the 2008 show for example. GSMA is where we saw the … Read more

iSpeak translator apps talk to your iPhone

For Senior Editors Bonnie Cha and Kent German, Future Apps' new language program for the iPhone and iPod Touch may be just the thing to get them around Barcelona next week as they attend the GSMA Mobile World Congress in that famed Spanish city.

iSpeak is a set of translation apps that can convert words and sentences from English to another language, or vice versa. You type your phrase into the app, which quickly translates your text. If you're not sure how to pronounce the phrase, pressing a button triggers the app to speak the words aloud. iSpeak got … Read more

As a Cyber-shot phone, the C903 puts digital photography front and center. The 5-megapixel camera offers a wide variety features such as a flash, image stabilization, face and smile detection, a 16x digital zoom, auto-focus, geo-tagging and picture blogging.

You'll also find messaging and e-mail, USB mass storage, a voice recorder, stereo … Read more

ZTE to unveil smartphone lineup at GSMA 2009

The wonderful and torturous thing about GSMA Mobile World Congress is that you get to see handsets from a number of international manufacturers that are beyond imagination but will most likely never make it Stateside.

Take ZTE for example. It may not be a recognized cell phone brand in the United States, although the company does offer a couple of its handsets through MetroPCS, including the ZTE C79 and the ZTE C88, but it happens to be one of China's largest handset manufacturers.

ZTE will, once again, make the voyage to Barcelona this year and revealed on Tuesday that … Read more

Nokia unveiled its latest XpressMusic phone, the Nokia 5630, on Tuesday.

The new phone, which is less than a half-inch thick, is a full-featured multimedia handset designed for music lovers. It will debut next week at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The phone comes with a 4GB microSD card for music, but users can also get external memory cards with up to 16GB of storage. Users can listen through an integrated 3.5mm headset jack or on stereo headsets via Bluetooth. Another cool feature is the "Say and Play" function, which lets people control the music … Read more
