Take that, Apple. Dutch court cool with Samsung Tab design

Apple suffered another legal setback after a Dutch court sided with Samsung Electronics, ruling that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not infringe upon the iPad's design.

A court in The Hague, Netherlands, dismissed an appeal by Apple, its latest attempt to get Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 banned from the country, according to legal blog Foss Patents. A lower court in The Hague had initially dismissed a similar request by Apple in August.

Beware of counterfeit tablets, warns security vendor

Buyers looking for the latest hot tablet should be careful where and how they do their shopping.

As almost 100 new brand-name tablets wend their way through CES this week, OpSec Security is cautioning that a lot of phony tablets are popping up on certain e-commerce sites and business-to-business marketplaces.

In a study released yesterday, the security and brand protection vendor said that such Web sites as Alibaba, DHgate, EC21, Made-in-China, and TradeKey can be home to counterfeiters who sell fake items in bulk or at unrealistically low prices.

Samsung said to be rethinking Android 4.0 upgrade for Galaxy S

Samsung dropped a bit of bad news last Friday when it announced on one of its Korean promotional blogs that it wouldn't be bringing Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) to its Galaxy S smartphone or its 7-inch Galaxy Tab.

Samsung Galaxy S, Tab: No Android 4.0 for you

Owners of Samsung's Galaxy S smartphone and the 7-inch Galaxy Tab won't be getting the latest and greatest version of Android.

In a blog posting on a Korean promotional site run by Samsung, the company noted that the two devices would not receive the update to Android 4.0, the most up to date version of Google's mobile operating system.

Samsung announces Ice Cream Sandwich plans for Galaxy line

Now that it's launched Ice Cream Sandwich on its Galaxy Nexus, Samsung today became the latest hardware maker to outline Android 4.0 updates for its remaining smartphones and tablets.

A posting on the company's blog tells us that most, if not all, of its Galaxy device lineup from 2011 will see Ice Cream Sandwich. So if you're keeping track, that will include the Galaxy S II, the Galaxy Note, and a number of Galaxy Tab models.

Amazon Kindle Fire lights up mobile ad network

Amazon's Kindle Fire was one of the hottest devices tracked by ad network Millennial Media in November though it didn't debut until halfway through the month.

Millennial Media's November Mobile Mix report found that the number of ad impressions on the Fire grew at an average daily rate of 19 percent, slightly outshining the growth of the first iPad in early 2010.

"We're not just seeing millions of impressions, we're seeing a monthly run rate of hundreds of millions of impressions," said the report of the Fire.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 now flying with American Airlines

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 is flying high.

The company today announced that its tablet is now available to American Airlines customers flying in the first- and business-class cabins on transcontinental and overseas flights. More specifically, the company said the tablets, which are running custom-built software, are on flights from New York's JFK to Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as on planes traveling from Miami to San Francisco and Los Angeles. International flights to and from Europe and South America will also have tablets.

Samsung, Apple tablet tit for tat to extend to displays

Samsung could beat Apple to market with a tablet packing a high-resolution display, as the two bitter rivals vie to be the first on the block with a next-gen tablet.

Australia court lifts ban on Galaxy Tab sales

Samsung was given the go-ahead to launch the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia today after that country's High Court ruled that it would not hear Apple's application for special leave to reinstate the ban on the controversial tablet.

The ruling means that Samsung is now free to import the Galaxy Tab 10.1 into Australia en masse for a full launch before the busy Christmas sales period.
