Report: Next iPhone not coming until October?

Those who were expecting Apple to ship a follow-up to the iPhone 4 this summer may be in for a longer wait than usual.

A new report from Japanese Mac blog Macotakra says Apple is behind its usual schedule of ordering parts that go into the manufacturing process for the device. That change in pace could result in Apple shipping out a phone a few months later than the June time frame for the previous two models, and July for the iPhone 3G.

AppleInsider, which picked up on the report this morning, notes that the later timing would result in the next iPhone missing Apple's fiscal 2011, which concludes on September 24 this year.

Along with the timing news, Macotakra's report, which is based on its sources in China, notes that Apple has still not committed to changing the materials used on the back of the iPhone from glass to metal. Rumors of such a change had first cropped up in March, with a follow-up report a few weeks later by 9to5Mac that said Apple was indeed testing out prototypes of future iPhone designs with metal backs. … Read more

Study: Miami top online flirting city in U.S.

I have a soft spot for Miami.

It is the only American city worth inhabiting from October until April. It has, to my mind, one of the finest restaurants in the U.S.--Sra. Martinez. And it does often seem to have its priorities in the right order: Gym before breakfast. Breakfast before beach. Beach before dinner.

Now, Miami appears to be embracing another fine characteristic. According to the social network Badoo, Miami experiences more online flirting than any other city in America.

Badoo's global study looked at 12 million flirtatious contacts over a one-month period. In a … Read more

TeX for Windows

TeX was a groundbreaking software-based typesetting system when Donald Knuth released it in 1978, and it remains popular, especially in academic and scientific publishing. MiKTeX is an up-to-date implementation of TeX for Windows. It adds a Windows installer and setup wizard, program updates, and an integrated package manager that can retrieve missing components online and install them automatically. It also includes a full suite of associated programs, fonts, templates, and tools, such as Yap, a DVI file viewer. MiKTeX is open-source freeware that runs on Windows 7, Vista, XP, and Server, but not on Windows 2000 or earlier versions. It'… Read more

The 404 766: Where no milk will ever be our milk (podcast)

Today's show title comes from this scene in Billy Madison, but unfortunately Adam Sandler got no recognition at last night's Academy Awards.

We thought James Franco and Anne Hathaway made a cute couple of hosts, and we appreciated James's #oscarsrealtime updates but we also agree with Roger Ebert and the LA Times, who gave critical reviews of the remarkably tame ceremony.

As usual, the Oscar food puns for each nominee were borderline more entertaining than the show itself.

Last week we talked about a Facebook app called Breakup Notifier that would send you a message when your crush changed his or her relationship status to "single."

Well, an "accidental" change in the Facebook developer's code permanently disabled access to such notifications, so creator Dan Loewenherz clever shifted his focus to a new project called the Crush Notifier.

The Facebook Crush Notifier lets you purchase Facebook credits that allow you to select crushes in your friend list. Those individuals are notified in an anonymous e-mail, and have the option to rate you back.

If you're selected as well, you'll receive a similar message- unfortunately… Read more

Lover loses $200,000 to fake online girlfriend

Sometimes online love is even more blind than the real thing.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a 48-year-old man from Naperville, Ill., had been in an online relationship with a woman for two-and-a-half years.

You might wonder why they had not consummated their relationship, by, say, meeting. But some feel the virtual world is, for them, enough.

Regardless, last Wednesday the man reportedly called police because he believed his online love was in serious trouble--he was convinced she'd been kidnapped in London.

Clearly, this seemed like a serious matter. The man reportedly provided the police with a copy of … Read more

Motorola Xoom priced at whopping $1,199.99?

Is Motorola's Xoom being priced not to sell? That's the question a lot of folks are asking as a tipster pointed Engadget to a listing on Best Buy's Web site, showing the upcoming 10.1-inch tablet priced at $1,199.99, with preorders starting in Best Buy stores on February 17.

Over the last few weeks, some reports suggested the Xoom, which has impressive specs and is the first tablet to run Google's Android 3.0 operating system (Honeycomb), would be priced at $800. But for now, anyway, the Best Buy Web site seems to state … Read more
