Ray Ozzie's cloud hangs over the Valley

PALO ALTO, Calif.--Ray Ozzie tends to see things much like a Seattle meteorologist--always cloudy.

Making a trip to sunny Silicon Valley, Ozzie addressed Silicon Valley's Churchill Club, outlining the transformational role that cloud computing will play.

As he discussed that vision, moderator Steven Levy asked if Microsoft itself was sufficiently cloudy when he had arrived.

I saw an interesting article in the New York Times this weekend titled "Put Ad on Web. Count Clicks. Revise." The premise of the article goes something like this: because the web provides functionality to test every variation of a banner ad for effectiveness, the next big thing is tailoring advertising in the moment, and leveraging findings from click-thru rates to construct more relevant offerings for consumers. Yahoo's Bartz willing to sell search

CARLSBAD, Calif.--Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz said Wednesday that her company continues to have talks with Microsoft on a search deal and indicated a willingness to sell.

The prerequisites, she said, are the right price, a technology she believes in, and access to the data her company needs.

"There's two parties in all this," she said in a speech at the D: All Things Digital conference here. "The other party has to have boatloads of money and the right technology."

AT&T CEO defends network issues

CARLSBAD, Calif.--AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson was the first person on the D: All Things Digital hot seat Wednesday, called on to address quality issues that have hampered the company's 3G cellular roll-out.

Moderator Walt Mossberg showed some data from polling that the conference did that found that not wanting AT&T was the No. 1 reason non-iPhone owners gave for not buying Apple's phone.

Stephenson defended the carrier saying that the No. 1 reason people leave all carriers is "network quality."

Marketers face three types of media as channels of interaction with their audiences: paid media, earned media, and owned media.
