Amazon streams free movies to Prime members

Amazon said today that it is offering Amazon Prime members free, instant streaming of more than 5,000 movies and TV shows.

In a press release, the company said the feature will be offered at no additional cost above the $79 that Prime members already pay annually. The movies and TV shows can be watched instantly on Macs, PCs, and nearly 200 models of Internet-connected devices, Amazon said. Amazon Prime is a membership program that offers customers free two-day shipping.

Comcast launching 24-hour 3D channel Sunday

Comcast is ushering in the launch of a 24-hour 3D channel by enlisting the help of Kings of Leon and the National Hockey League.

The cable provider said yesterday that starting at 3 p.m. PT on Sunday, its new Xfinity 3D channel will begin broadcasting. The channel will start with an airing of the 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic, pitting the Montreal Canadiens against the Calgary Flames outdoors at McMahon Stadium in Calgary. After the game is over, Comcast plans to broadcast a Kings of Leon concert from Hamburg, Germany.

Study: 83 percent watched Web video in January

When it comes to online video, it's hard to find someone who hasn't watched at least one clip in the past month.

A whopping 83.5 percent of all U.S. Internet users watched a Web video in January, totaling over 171 million individuals, market researcher ComScore revealed yesterday in its online video rankings. The average online video lasted about five minutes, and those who watched ad-supported content were forced to sit through an average of 24 seconds worth of commercials.

Comcast sales, income ride customer growth

With its acquisition of NBC Universal finally done, Comcast today reported a boost in both sales and earnings for its fourth quarter.

For the quarter ended December 31, the cable carrier earned $1.02 billion, a gain of 6.6 percent from the $955 million earned in the prior year's quarter. Sales grew by 7.2 percent to reach $9.72 billion compared with $9.07 billion a year ago. Both results managed to beat the expectations of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, according to Reuters, and prompted the company to lift its annual dividend by 19 percent.

Redbox launches Android app, updates iPhone app

Movie rental company Redbox is trying to improve its standing in the mobile market.

The company announced today that it has launched a new Android application that will allow its customers to look through available titles, find one of its kiosks around the U.S., and reserve films from the app. In addition, it updated its iPhone app to make the software more responsive to users when they rent movies. Blu-ray film comes with Android-friendly option

Android handset owners will now be able to watch a digital copy of a Blu-ray film on their smartphones.

The functionality comes by the way of "Unstoppable," an action-thriller starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine that hit store shelves today. The movie is the first with a Blu-ray Digital Copy that plays on Android, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment said in a statement.
