OutSmarted?

While I was impressed with the number of Smart Fortwos trundling around the streets of Vancouver this past weekend, the most remarkable vehicle I saw was this contraption outside the Vancouver Art Gallery.

There were no signs or explanatory material to accompany the aerodynamically challenged two-seater, and its designers will have to make some modifications to ensure that it will be able to drive in a straight line (not to mention some tough questions on crash and rollover safety)--but just imagine how many of these you could fit into a parking lot.

T-Mobile Wing takes flight

Finally! Ever since the release of Windows Mobile 6 back in February, we've anxiously awaited the arrival of supported devices, and we're not talking about software upgrades or smart phones of the announced-but-not-yet-shipping variety (a la Motorola Q 9). No, if you're anything like us, you want to get your hands on one now and you finally can.

T-Mobile and HTC today announced the immediate availability of the T-Mobile Wing (aka HTC Herald)--through select T-Mobile retail stores and online, for $299.99 with a two-year contract. As the successor to the T-Mobile MDA, the Wing runs … Read more

Another energy efficiency expert jumps in IPO

EnerNoc, which sells systems that automatically curb power consumption in buildings, saw its stock jump 20 percent on Friday, a day after its initial public offering.

EnerNoc sold 3.75 million shares for $26 a share in its IPO. The shares started trading on the open market on Friday and closed at $31.13. The $26 price was higher than expected. The company initially said it would sell its stock for $21 to $23 a share and then raised the range to $23 to $25 a share.

The company monitors electrical consumption in commercial buildings and matches that against electrical … Read more

Motorola Q 9 headed for Italy first; calls out iPhone

Today, Motorola showed off a portfolio of new and some not-so-new cell phones and smart phones at a press event in New York. Along with the unveiling of the Razr 2, the company announced that the Motorola Q 9 (nee Motorola Q q9) would be available starting this week...in Italy. What the?! Motorola said it expected the Q 9 to ship in other parts of the world this summer, and let's hope this includes the United States. The Moto Q 9 will run Windows Mobile 6 and support HSDPA/UMTS networks for data speeds of up to 3.… Read more

Teaser alert: Nokia N81 and N82 pictures surface

Just when you got your hands on the Nokia N95 and the Nokia N75, it seems there's something cooler on the horizon (as usual). Images and specs have surfaced on two new Nokia N series phones: the Nokia N81 and the Nokia N82. The N81 looks to be a sleek quadband (EDGE; 2100MHz HSDPA-lovin') slider phone with 8GM internal memory, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0. It's said to be replacing the music-centric Nokia N91 and comes equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

On the other hand, the Nokia N82 seems to be going the camera route with … Read more

Fresh name, fresh features: Cingular 8525 gets an upgrade

Today, AT&T/Cingular announced a rebranded and upgraded version of the Cingular 8525 called ... wait for it ... the AT&T 8525. Aside from the new name, the 8525 brings push-to-talk capabilities and support for the carrier's Mobile Music and Cellular Video streaming service (aka Cingular Musicand Cingular Video). This is, of course, in addition to the 8525's already powerful feature set of push e-mail, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, HSDPA support, and a 2-megapixel camera. The AT&T 8525 will be available starting May 14 for $399.99.

And hey, Cingular 8525 owners, don't get … Read more

It's official: Palm Treo 755p lands at Sprint

We can finally put all the rumors to rest--the Palm Treo 755p is real, and it's officially arrived on Sprint's doorstep, looking all dapper in burgundy or midnight blue, might we add. The 755p will be available starting May 14 and replaces the older Treo 700p. The Palm-based smart phone not only sports a more compact form factor similar to that of its GSM cousin, the Treo 680, but it also brings a collection of small but notable enhancements--instant messaging and Google Maps for Mobile, just to name two. But are the extras enough to warrant the expensive $… Read more

Sony Ericsson unveils next-gen P1 smart phone

Along with Sony Ericsson's other announcements today, the company unveiled its fifth-generation P-series smart phone, the Sony Ericsson P1. The P1 is 25 percent smaller than its predecessor, the Sony Ericsson P990i, but that doesn't mean it skimps on features. The smart phone is based on the Symbian and UIQ operating systems and has a 2.6-inch touch screen, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and push e-mail support for Exchange ActiveSync and BlackBerry Connect. Other goodies include a dual-function keyboard (like the one found on the Sony Ericsson M600i), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and VoIP support. The tri-band (GPRS 900/… Read more

Photos: The big, bad Nokia N75

Now, by big and bad, we don't necessarily mean that in the "This phone is so rockin', it'll knock your socks off" kind of way. The Nokia N75 is big in the bulky sense and it's bad in that there are some major disappointments to this much-anticipated phone. Is it all bad? I mean, there's got to be a reason why there's been so much clamor for this phone since it was first introduced in September 2006, right? Well, we finally got our hands on one, so take a look through our photo … Read more

Photos: BlackBerry Curve announced for Cingular/AT&T

Ooo, we'd hate to be a RIM BlackBerry 8800 owner right now. Just months after the 8800's release, Research In Motion and Cingular/AT&T have released a sleeker, sexier model that will make you wish that you had waited a while longer. How the world of technology can be so cruel. The RIM BlackBerry Curve (aka BlackBerry 8300) is the smallest and lightest, full-QWERTY BlackBerry to date, and we're absolutely stoked on the design. We want to be clear that the BlackBerry 8300 is more about the revamped design rather than new features (read: still … Read more
