Tim Cook has been Apple's chief executive officer for little more than two months, but he's already made some distinct changes from his predecessor, a new report says.

The Wall Street Journal has posted a profile of Cook's experience since taking on the CEO role (subscription required). The paper took a close look at a number of changes made during his tenure so far, which began in August when late company co-founder Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO.

Touch that iPhone, and you're busted

Clutch those iPhones tightly.

Some evidence suggests that thieves are targeting the handset more than ever.

The good news is that, thanks to technology from Apple, as well as third-party security apps, authorities have a better chance of catching the bad guys and retrieving the phones. Not only can the device's GPS system help hunt down a handset, but apps such as iGotYa will snap photos of whoever is in possession of the phone.

The bad news is that sometimes, the cops grab innocent people.

Last week, police in Petaluma, Calif., kicked in the door of Moriah Stafford, and … Read more

iPhone 4S battery issue reminiscent of 'antennagate'

commentary Apple's silence on a problem that appears to be affecting a number of iPhone 4S users is bringing back memories of last year's "antennagate," something that could give hope to those expecting a fix.

As noted last week, users have flocked to Apple's support site to complain about lower than advertised battery life on the new phone, which went on sale in mid-October.

On paper, the new phone beats out its predecessor by one hour of 3G talk time, yet falls 100 hours shorter when it comes to standby--the time a phone will continue … Read more

Apple contacts man whose home was searched by employees

A San Francisco man whose home was searched by Apple security officials hunting for a missing, unreleased iPhone is in discussions with the computer maker, his attorney said.

Two Apple employees claimed they had traced the errant device to the residence of Sergio Calderon, 22, and then visited his house with four plainclothes officers from the San Francisco Police Department in late July. Calderon, who has said he was led to believe everyone who entered the house was a police officer, has hired attorney David Monroe.

Monroe declined to elaborate on the conversations with Apple.

Police have said a two-man … Read more

Apple planning solar farm near data center, report says

For board member Al Gore, Apple's future is in fine shape in spite of the loss of Steve Jobs--and in large part because of Jobs.

Of all the breakthroughs that Jobs helped bring about, from the Mac to the iPad to Pixar Animation Studios, Gore said, "I actually think his greatest work was Apple itself."

How can Apple replace Steve Jobs' celebrity? It can't.

commentary The future of Apple's executive leadership continues to be of intense focus to onlookers as the company forges ahead without its late co-founder Steve Jobs in the picture.

Apple celebrated Jobs' life yesterday in a private employee tribute filled with executive speeches, live performances by famous musicians, and multi-story banners of Jobs at various points in his life that hung within the complex. If you didn't know it was the inside of Apple's headquarters, the memorial could have easily been mistaken for a rock concert or a rally, in part because it was a little bit … Read more
