Google's cuddly Mother's Day doodle

Mother's Day doesn't fall on the same day everywhere.

Somehow, the card companies that invented it couldn't quite manage worldwide co-ordination. So while the U.S. and Australia seem to celebrate their mothers today, the British and the Saudi Arabians, for example, honored their mothers on March 18. (They had their own doodle, embedded below.)

Still, Google is a quintessentially profit-oriented American company, so today its doodle shows how mothers can profit from the affections of their little offspring.

Yes, it's 'o" for offspring, as two little o's in Google's logo come racing … Read more

Woz: I don't have broadband, and I never thought I'd get girls

One can only imagine the gasps. And perhaps even a guffaw.

According to Australia's News.com, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak was addressing a business forum in Perth when he made a stark admission.

"I don't have broadband at my home," he said. In case the Australians hadn't heard, understood, or were merely in a state of catatonia, he added: "I, Steve Wozniak, don't have broadband at my home."

He went on to explain that broadband in his little part of Los Gatos, Calif., is "a monopoly." You have to get … Read more

After nine dropped cell phone calls for help, couple dies

The facts serve only to frustrate and sadden.

An elderly couple was exiting the driveway of their remote vacation home in Andes, N.Y., when their car got stuck in a ditch.

What followed, according to the New York Daily News, challenges the imagination.

They couldn't get out. So they used their cell phone to call for help. The calls kept dropping. Relatives believe there had been five calls at this stage.

So 88-year-old Arthur Morris tried to scramble his way out of the car, but he got stuck in between the bottom of the door and the ground … Read more

Verizon's moms to company: How 'bout a contract Mother's Day?

Mother's Day exists not merely to make some people large profits, but also to raise sincere emotions.

Perhaps this is what inspired some working moms at Verizon Communications to appear in a video, which serves as a response to Verizon's current Mother's Day TV ad.

You might have been assailed by this TV ad. It's the one in which a mother and daughter spend the whole time weeping because they are both desperate for Droid Razrs or merely a desperate child-raiser and her daughter.

The point of the ad is to talk about what moms really … Read more

Man allegedly stabs PC with samurai sword during FBI raid

The FBI must prepare its agents for most things.

However, it might have been a first when special agent Jonathan MacDonald and colleagues forced their way into the Palm Coast, Fla., home of Kamil Mezalka, whom they suspected of being involved in child pornography.

For their report claims that Mezalka, standing in his underwear, began stabbing his computer with a samurai sword.

I am grateful to The Smoking Gun for making my Friday more complete by relating this detail.

MacDonald's affidavit presents a moving description of the proceedings.

He says the FBI executed a "mechanical breach of the … Read more

Fans make sport of mistakenly tweeted porn link

It is surely accepted that sports writers are the most talented employees of news organizations.

They work under the most pressure, and their creativity is unbounded.

However, with that pressure comes the possibility of pain.

So I am torn and twisted by the information brought to me through Gizmodo that Vito Stellino, the very ball-sports oriented writer of the Florida Times Union, seems to have got his links in a bind by offering his Twitter followers material of a difficult nature.

No, he didn't start Weining (that's the practice of attempting to attach a personally revealing image to … Read more

Britain's prime minister thought LOL meant 'lots of love'? So what?

The Atlantic Ocean was experiencing rough waters this morning.

This, many suggest, was due to the sheer power of the guffaws that were being emitted from Britain's shores after it was revealed that the nation's prime minister, David Cameron, seemed unclear what it means when you write "LOL" in a text.

The Guardian reports that former News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks, in giving evidence to the Leveson inquiry into News Corp.'s phone hacking, revealed that Cameron send her texts regularly.

She also revealed that he kept signing them "LOL", in the … Read more

Man says he saved bird with iPhone app

It's hard out here for a chaffinch.

People are putting up more and more houses. And then there's those solar panels that seem to have come out of nowhere. You bang into them and your head hurts more than when you've had eight pints of fertilizer.

So who is going to help you? Well, someone with the right iPhone app, it seems.

For here is the story of bird-loving tree surgeon, Leon Timms who, on discovering an injured chaffinch, operated on it with an iPhone app.

The Sun records how Timms believed the bird was fighting for … Read more

Boasting on Facebook 'can feel as good as sex'

This morning, three women in Starbucks turned to me, smiled, gave me their cards and suggested I come to their houses for chardonnay and vinegar chips anytime I wanted.

Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't see you there. I was just practicing my Facebook status updates.

Given that I don't really do that Facebook thing much, this hasn't been easy. But I have moved by research from the great university of Harvard telling me that if I want to seek sexual pleasure outside of direct carnality, I should simply boast on Facebook.

I can feel you calling … Read more

When Steve Jobs went Ghostbusters on IBM

It seems as if each week, another little tale of Steve Jobs' wise and wicked ways and words emerges.

Just a few days ago, audio was aired in which the Apple co-founder compared his company in the bad times to Jeffrey Dahmer. (I have embedded the evidence.)

The quote, published in Fast Company, was: "Imagine if you're the mother of, you know, some bad kid...You're Jeffrey Dahmer's mother. Or you're the mother of some kid who's turned into a robber ... robbed banks or something, been to jail. I don't equate Apple with … Read more
