RIAA to LimeWire judge: Stand firm on wording

The trade group for the top four record companies is ratcheting up the pressure on a pro-technology attorney who may have offered controversial advice to file sharing service LimeWire.

U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood, in the Southern District of New York, last week ruled in favor of the music industry in its copyright case against the company that operates LimeWire. Wood included in her 59-page decision a reference to Fred von Lohmann, senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an advocacy group for tech companies and Internet users.

In describing testimony from Lime Wire founder Mark Gorton, Wood … Read more

Legal experts: LimeWire likely doomed

A federal court judge has likely dealt a death blow to LimeWire, one of the most popular and oldest file-sharing systems, according to legal experts.

On Wednesday, CNET broke the news that U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood granted summary judgment in favor of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which filed a copyright lawsuit against LimeWire in 2006. In her decision, Wood ruled Lime Group, parent of LimeWire software maker Lime Wire, and founder Mark Gorton committed copyright infringement, induced copyright infringement, and engaged in unfair competition.

"It is obviously a fairly fatal decision for them," … Read more

New tricks for Photoshop, death throes for LimeWire

Photoshop Creative Suite 5 roared out of Adobe's coding lab with a slew of feature changes that spell out actual improvements (unlike the last release's mostly visual overhaul) in this decades-old premium powerhouse of an image processor.

Features that automatically correct your lens and improve the way the editor processes high dynamic range (HDR) are two significant additions. Enhanced 3D image tools and a more effective algorithm for filling in image holes with information taken from neighboring parts of the photo are two others that help make this version of Photoshop a must-have for serious image-manipulators. Cables as art: Behold the 'Connected' sculpture

Now that it's 2010 and we're all wireless-ified, there's plenty of Cat 5--better known as Ethernet--cable lying around. You could throw it out, but right now we're all trying to be green. So instead, let's make art, like L.A.-based artist Kasey McMahon did with this stunning sculpture.

She used an unknown quantity of steel, CAT 5, and other data cables to sculpt a life-size interpretation of herself, and called it "Connected."

I'm just wondering if I could actually use it. Would the connection of one toe line up with the … Read more
