Best Buy: Delays on DVD rentals boost sales

The agreement by Netflix and other top video-rental services to wait 28 days before renting newly released DVDs appears to be boosting disc sales--as much as 30 percent in some cases, say two national retailers.

Representatives from retail chains Best Buy and Hastings Entertainment told CNET during the past week that disc sales and even rentals are up for movies that aren't available at Netflix or Redbox during what has come to be known as the "sales-only window."

"On sales of specific titles, we've seen our market share go up over time and degradation of … Read more

Vudu streaming comes to Web browsers

The Vudu video-on-demand streaming service has long been available on a wide variety of connected home entertainment products, including networked TVs, Blu-ray players, and even the PlayStation 3. But now subscribers will be able to watch Vudu movies through computer Web browsers, too.

As with rivals Netflix and Amazon, the Vudu browser experience is pretty much the same as what you'll find on those other Vudu venues--the identical content library (albeit limited to standard-definition, thanks to studio restrictions) at the identical pricing. The video should work on any computer browser (Windows, Mac, Linux) that's compatible with the latest … Read more

Experience Vimeo.com on your iPhone

Popular video enthusiast site Vimeo.com does not have the same level of viewership as YouTube, but it's definitely a great place to find interesting user-made videos. Vimeo for iPhone (free) lets you join up with the site or log in within the app so you can upload, edit, and view videos on your iPhone. It comes with many of the popular Vimeo user-requested features like the Inbox, the ability to Watch Later, … Read more

Starz to delay new series on Netflix

Cable channel Starz says it will no longer allow its original series to stream on Netflix the day after airing. Instead, the channel is requiring a 90-day waiting period for all episodes.

Starz says the new policy will go into effect on April 1, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. Eventually this policy will also apply to movies Starz supplies to Netflix, though an exact date for that wasn't given.

Netflix seemed to take it in stride.

"It's just their new series, and 90 days is fine. We still have existing series the day … Read more

Netflix gives 3 percent credit for outage

Netflix has apologized for Tuesday's outage of its streaming service.

"We're sorry you may have had trouble watching instantly," an e-mail sent last night to Netflix subscribers reads. The company went on to explain that the outage was "due to technical issues." To make it right, Netflix is offering a 3 percent credit to customers on their next billing statement. The credit is available for seven days, and users can redeem it by following the link in the e-mail.

Netflix subscribers were stymied for a couple hours or so Tuesday night when trying to … Read more

March Madness On Demand offers free live feeds

Today's the day, sports fans. The NCAA men's basketball tournament slams into high gear, with 16 second-round games kicking off at noon ET--and 16 more lined up for tomorrow. Our nation's productivity is about to take a two-week nosedive.

This probably won't help, but I don't care: NCAA March Madness On Demand for iOS streams every single game, live, free of charge. That's a pretty nice change over last year, when you had to pay 10 bucks for it.

The app works on iPhones, iPods, and iPads (sorry, Android users), and can stream over … Read more

Reports say Netflix in talks for original content

White-hot movie-streaming service Netflix could be looking to become the Web version of HBO as it negotiates to acquire an original television series helmed by "The Social Network" director David Fincher and starring actor Kevin Spacey.

The talks, originally reported by Web site Deadline Hollywood, were later reported by The Wall Street Journal, which quoted unnamed sources and said the discussions were part of a larger, "behind-the-scenes" effort by Netflix to hit up Hollywood production companies for original material to entice new subscribers to its streaming service. The Journal also said Spacey's representative had confirmed … Read more
