The company took in $1.9 billion in revenue, more than double last year's fourth-quarter haul of $930.4 million. And it had $412.5 million left over in profits, equal to 72 cents a share in earnings and two cents better than what Wall Street analysts were expecting.

Palm's Centro lifts sales, but not revenue or profits

Palm's Centro continues to sell well, but it's going to be a long time before the company's business gets back in the black.

Palm reported its financial results for its fiscal third quarter Thursday. Let's get the good news out of the way first: the Centro lifted Palm to its best smartphone quarter in its history, with 833,000 units on a "sell-through" basis, meaning phones that were actually purchased by people, not retailers.

The problem is that at $99, the Centro doesn't generate a lot of revenue or profit on those unit … Read more

Apple shareholders pepper Jobs with questions

Apple CEO Steve Jobs fielded several wide-ranging questions from Apple shareholders Tuesday at the company's annual meeting, covering ground from the iPhone to the plans for a post-Jobs Apple.

For the most part, Apple's shareholder meeting is just as boring as anyone's. This year was a little more interesting, as a non-binding shareholder proposal was approved advocating that the board of directors give shareholders input into executive compensation. But the most compelling part of the meeting was the hour or so in which Jobs, COO Tim Cook, and CFO Peter Oppenheimer fielded questions from a wide range … Read more

It's not going to be a happy holiday season for Palm employees.

The company issued a statement after the close of the market Thursday warning that revenue for its second fiscal quarter would be about $30 million less than it had predicted. In addition, its gross margin is expected to be about four points lower. It's just the latest item of bad news from a company that can't wait for 2007 to end.
