Denver's high-end audio show wows audiophiles

The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest 2011, held last weekend at the Denver Marriott Tech Center Hotel, showcased a vast array of affordable and high-end audio designs. Hundreds of manufacturers from North America, Europe, and Asia were represented at the show. RMAF has a very different vibe than the Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas every January--RMAF is more of a grassroots affair.

I noted a trend to more stylish audiophile speakers, like the 28-inch tall Davone Ray ($7,500/pair) and the curvy, aluminum-bodied Dali Fazon F5 ($4,495/pair). Most bona fide high-end speakers are big and bulky … Read more

Yahoo no longer playing hard-to-get, report says

Yahoo has been playing hard-to-get lately, saying that it doesn't want to be acquired. But according to a new report, the company is handing out financial information to give potential suitors much of the data they need to file a bid.

According to The Wall Street Journal, which cites "people familiar with the matter," Yahoo has authorized investment banks Goldman Sachs and Allen & Co. to send out both public and nonpublic financial data to a host of companies that have indicated some interest in acquiring the online giant. According to the Journal's sources, the data … Read more

Meg Whitman for HP CEO? Board eyes change

He hasn't even been around for a year, and already reports are cropping up suggesting that Hewlett-Packard Chief Executive Leo Apotheker will soon be replaced.

According to reports from AllThingsD and Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, HP's board of directors is nearing a decision to remove Apotheker as CEO, and hire former eBay CEO Meg Whitman in his place. Although both publications said that a deal is by no means in place between HP and Whitman, Bloomberg's sources said she could be named to the position initially in an interim basis.

Apotheker took over at HP in November. … Read more

Google Wallet launching today? Signs point to yes

The pieces appear to be falling into place for the launch of Google Wallet today.

Last night, social-media blog TechCrunch posted an image purporting to be from Google Wallet partners, showing documentation on the service. That documentation says that "Google Wallet is launching September 19, 2011."

Then this morning, another blog, GigaOm, posted an image, taken by one of its reporters at a coffee shop in San Francisco, of a Google Wallet payment reader. The reader provides directions on it, saying users must "tap" their smartphone against the device in order to "pay by smartphone.&… Read more

Internet outage or no outage? That is the question

Twitter users tweeted this afternoon about a "rather large Internet outage" that was affecting access to the site, but an Internet traffic expert said he didn't see any major problems today.

The Internet Traffic Report showed problems for a period of time today for some routers serving North America. Specifically, three routers in Canada were registering zero response time and 100 percent packet loss, as were one in Mexico, New Hampshire, Texas, and Wisconsin. Routers in Nevada and Iowa appeared to be having less severe problems.

Representatives of the Internet Traffic Report did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment, or immediately respond to a phone message left for someone in Arizona listed as the administrator via the Whois domain lookup later today.

Bill Woodcock, research director of the Packet Clearing House, told CNET that he was not aware of any major Internet performance problems today.

"I know that there was an outage on Level 3's network in Phoenix between noon and 1 p.m. [PT]," he said. "There was certainly no general widespread outage at that time."

Level 3 provided this statement tonight: "At approximately noon PT, Level 3 experienced an isolated network issue that resulted in temporary voice and IP traffic disruptions for customers in the Phoenix area for approximately one hour. The company acted quickly to resolve the issue and service is now restored for those customers."

Meanwhile, at about 3:30 p.m. PT, Twitter's Support account said it was investigating "site availability issues some folks are experiencing." … Read more

EV battery capacity glut could benefit consumers

Makers of lithium ion electric-vehicle batteries worldwide are outpacing EV automakers in terms of manufacturing capacity.

This is likely to result in a temporary idleness on the part of some factories by 2013, according to a report released today by Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

The report (only available to BNEF subscribers) shows it's simply a matter of doing the math based on manufacturers' reports and commitments worldwide from both the auto and battery industries.

Automakers are expected to produce roughly 839,000 plug-in EVs worldwide by 2013, which in turn will drive lithium ion EV battery demand to 18 … Read more

Facebook first-half revenue doubles, report says

Facebook's revenue skyrocketed in the first half of 2011, according to a report from Reuters today.

Citing a source with "knowledge of its financials," the news service said Facebook doubled its first-half revenue this year, growing to $1.6 billion. In addition, Reuters said, the company was able to generate a profit of nearly $500 million.

Since it's a private company, Facebook does not divulge its financial performance. However, that hasn't stopped reports on its financials to continue to crop up.

Early last year, social blog Inside Facebook reported that the social network would generate about $1 billion in 2010, … Read more

Groupon postponing IPO over market chaos?

Daily-deals provider Groupon has decided to postpone its initial public offering, The Wall Street Journal is reporting, citing anonymous sources.

The Journal's sources claim that Groupon's management has decided against an IPO anytime soon due to the stock market's continued "volatility." Initially, the Journal's sources claim, Groupon was planning to price its shares during the middle of September and go public soon thereafter.

Groupon filed for its IPO with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in June. The $750 million IPO could value the company at a reported $20 billion to $25 billion, … Read more
