Video game industry sales slip, but remain strong

Led by hot demand for the Xbox 360, the video game industry scored its third best-selling May, trailing only 2009 and 2008. Revenue was down compared with a year ago due to lower console prices, according to the latest figures released Thursday by The NPD Group.

For the month, total revenue from gaming consoles, hardware, and software slipped 5 percent to $823.5 million, compared with $865.7 million a year ago. Video game hardware took the hardest hit, dropping 20 percent to $241.5 million from $303 million a year ago. Though sales were strong, lower hardware prices added … Read more

Sony's E3 event focuses on 3D gaming

LOS ANGELES--And then it was Sony's turn.

After Microsoft grabbed the spotlight with its Monday morning press conference, and Nintendo was the star earlier today, Sony got everyone's attention Tuesday afternoon with its own set of announcements.

Topping the bill for Sony and its PlayStation group was its plans to enable 3D gaming right away. Kaz Hirai, the president of Sony's Networked Products and Services group, touted the company's "end-to-end" 3D offerings, from its Bravia 3D TVs to its new roster of 3D-enabled games for the PlayStation 3.

Immediately, Hirai said, games like Super Stardust, Pain and Wipeout will be available in 3D from the PlayStation Store, and more than 20 additional titles will be added to the roster by the end of 2010. And even more titles will be coming in 3D next year, including Killzone 3, which was given a big, loud demo at the press conference. As well, PS3 users--all of whom will be able to play in 3D--can look forward to titles like Mortal Kombat, Tron: Evolution, NBA 2K11, Motorzone Apocalypse and Gran Turismo 5.

After 3D gaming, the second major piece of the puzzle for Sony Tuesday was PlayStation Move, its motion-controller system, which it first unveiled at E3 a year ago and talked about in more detail in March at the Game Developers Conference. But on Tuesday, Sony was able to talk in much more detail about specific games that will be Move-enabled. … Read more

PSP: I'm not dead yet

It was hard not to be reminded of Monty Python's famous sketch when Sony took the stage Tuesday during its E3 press conference, assuring the public that the PSP platform was still alive, kicking, and very much a viable platform. The company is right, to a degree: millions still play PSP games and own systems, and the platform is far from a failure. On the other hand, the PSP has still never materialized into the superior do-everything portable Sony once dreamed of it becoming.

Though at last year's E3 Sony focused on the expensive and disc-free PSP GoRead more

E3 flashback: Highlights from the past 10 years

Having attended the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show since 1999 (back then as an editor at gaming site UGO.com), we've seen trends, consoles, and even entire game companies come and go.

Preparing for the 2010 edition of E3 gave us a chance to go back through the hundreds of photos we've snapped over the years and pick out a few highlights (and maybe a couple of lowlights), which are presented in the slideshow below.

The majority of these pics are from 2002-2005, and include some noteworthy moments in gaming history, including our first look at the … Read more

E3 flashback: Booth babes edition

Though they are a much rarer species now, the annual E3 video game trade show was once crawling with scantily clad "booth babes."

Over the decade we've been attending the show, things eventually got so out of hand that dedicated "booth babe" Web sites were popping up, and game companies were involved with a kind of promotional model arms race--which in retrospect fits with the spend-whatever-it-takes years of the show in the first half of the 2000s. Eventually, it devolved into a kind of self-parody, and you see a lot less of it in recent … Read more

Study: $42 billion worth of PSP, DS games pirated

Between 2004 and 2009, nearly $42 billion worth of Sony PSP and Nintendo DS games were illegally downloaded from file-sharing sites, according to a new study by the Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association.

The group, which puts on the annual Tokyo Game Show, calculated the figure by seeing how often Japanese versions of the 20 best-selling games between 2004 and 2009 were pirated. It then multiplied that figure by the manufacturer's suggested retail price of each title. According to Andriasang, a gaming-news site that focuses on the Japanese market, the researchers also included a "ratio of sales" figure … Read more

Nintendo gives you wings

Oh all the jokes I could make about the Wii Wings! How many more ridiculous peripherals do we need for the Wii?

Picture this:

Person A is geared up with Wii accessories including wings, a balance board, a rowing machine, a steering wheel, a gun, and some Wiimote weights. All of these things are available for the Wii.

Person B has Natal on Xbox.

Which person do you want to be? Pretty soon, outfitting yourself to play Wii will have you looking like Doc Brown.
