LG Optimus Vu available unlocked, but not cheap

The Samsung Galaxy Note officially has some competition in the world of huge phone/tablet hybrids that work with a stylus--coming from another Korean company, LG, and its 5-inch Optimus Vu.

South Korea's second stab at a mega-phone went on sale in the country today with an unlocked price of about $900. The LTE-enabled Optimus Vu comes with Android Gingerbread, but LG promises an Ice Cream Sandwich update is just around the corner.… Read more

LG's Optimus L5 is a confused smartphone

BARCELONA, Spain--Sadly, the LG Optimus L5, a midrange Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) smartphone from the Korean chaebol, is one you should likely avoid.

While it's great to know affordable ICS devices will be made available, the Optimus L5 doesn't seem to have what it takes to wow even the budget consumer.

If you thought buying the handset would give you access to Google's latest mobile OS cheaply, you would be partially right. Sadly, the Optimus L5 comes with a custom UI layer that makes the experience more like Gingerbread than ICS. … Read more

Are specs becoming meaningless in the smartphone wars?

BARCELONA, Spain--Just as dual-core chips represented the pinnacle of mobile devices last year, quad-core phones are shaping up to be the must-have feature on any premiere smartphone.

The problem is, do consumers really care?

Sure, the tech media and analyst community obsess over specifications, and at a show like Mobile World Congress, it's hard to fault a vendor for putting its best foot as competitors vie for their share of media attention. But with chip technology advancing so quickly, we're increasingly getting to the point where having the fastest processor doesn't necessarily equate to having the best … Read more

BARCELONA, Spain--LG is banking that the consumer need for speed will drive sales of its mobile devices, a bet the company hopes will pay off with a larger foothold in the smartphone market.

The company's product lineup for Mobile World Congress, which was announced throughout last week, illustrates its increasing use of high-end components. The phones include Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core chips, high-resolution and 3D displays, better battery life, an embrace of the latest Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android, and the ability to tap into the super-fast 4G LTE network.

The devices on hand today were the … Read more

LG announces more phones: The Optimus LTE Tag and 3D Cube

With all the new phones being announced from LG, we're wondering if the company is going to have any surprises left to show at Mobile World Congress.

We already heard about the LG 4X HD and the Optimus Vu. But recently, the manufacturer unveiled two more new phones for the South Korean market: the Optimus LTE Tag and the Optimus 3D Cube.

The LTE Tag will sport a 4.3-inch WVGA display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and a 5-megapixel rear camera with flash. It will also have a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. The device will run on a … Read more

Quad-core LG 4X HD could be king of the Optimus hill

We haven't even left for Mobile World Congress yet and LG just keeps the news coming.

On the heels of the LG Optimus Vu, Optimus 3D Max, and the three L-Style handsets, the company also has confirmed the Optimus 4X HD.

The press release was in Korean, but thanks to Google Translate we got a rough, but very promising, look at its specs. And even if something was lost in translation, it's clear that the 4X HD should be at the head of LG's Optimus pack.

On the outside, we'll see a 4.7-inch display with … Read more
