How Apple whiffed on the new iPod Nano

Back in September, when Steve Jobs unveiled the sixth-generation iPod Nano with its multitouch display, my first thought was, "Wow, that thing's small. Maybe too small." As Jobs himself pointed out, it was tiny, even suggesting in his keynote that it could be worn as a wristwatch.

LG's 'Nano' LCD TVs get better local dimming

In advance of the Consumer Electronics Show next month, LG has released a teaser announcement vaguely detailing a couple of its new, high-end LED-based LCD TVs, the LW9500 and LW7700 series.

The company is branding the new models under a new "Nano" moniker, which it says refers to improved local-dimming LED technology. According to the release: "An extremely thin film printed with a proprietary light dispersion pattern combined with a full array of LEDs disperses light more evenly across the screen, creating pictures that are brighter and more uniform than conventional edge-lit LED sets." … Read more

Apple to streamline your screen in future iOS, Mac OS X versions

A patent application recently filed by Apple reveals that the computer maker is looking to reduce the amount of junk on your desktop by consolidating menu items and making them scrollable when touched, AppleInsider reports.

By touching an area of the screen, menus and commands would be activated (such as the pictured Shut Down menu).

Keeping these types of commands off the screen would theoretically allow for more screen real estate for Apps running. This would definitely prove useful for the smaller-screened iOS devices like the iPhone, iPod Touch, and even the new iPod Nano.

Why Apple will do a real iWatch

In the wake of a Steve Jobs keynote comment, the new and miniaturized iPod Nano has found a new role as geek chic wrist wear of the moment. As soon as one gets past the doing-it-because-you-can stage though, you probably realize that the Nano does not, in fact, make a very good watch.

Running a wire from your wrist to your ear so you can use the Nano as a music player--which is sort of the point--rather than just a timepiece with a short battery life is inelegant. Keynote comments notwithstanding, Steve Jobs would not approve.
