Windows 8 ultrabooks, hybrids to see uptick this year

Laptop suppliers will continue to see weak demand in the first half, but things should pick up later in the year, IHS iSuppli said today.

After a "bleak" first quarter and a "slow" first half overall, Windows 8-based ultrathin laptops will "help revive the market" later in the year, the market researcher said.

Obama commends Apple, Intel for U.S. manufacturing jobs

One of President Obama's policy points in his State of the Union speech tonight was that U.S. companies need to create jobs here. Not only did he stress this need, he also praised those companies already in the process of doing this, including Intel and Apple.

Intel's TV service will be on mobile devices too, exec says

Intel wants to revolutionize the TV industry, and that change won't come just through the chip giant's planned set-top box.

Erik Huggers, general manager of Intel Media, told CNET today that Intel's new Internet-based TV service also will be available on mobile devices, but he cautioned that it could take some time to expand to multiple platforms. He compared the process to the launch of the BBC's iPlayer video player, a project he oversaw while at that company.

Intel confirms it's building an Internet TV service and box

A lot has been written about Intel's TV push, but the company has largely remained silent -- until today.

Erik Huggers, the head of Intel Media, joined Walt Mossberg onstage at AllThingsD's media conference to confirm that Intel will be introducing an Internet-based TV service and box this year.

Intel-based phablet on the way from Asus

Asus, the maker of Google's Nexus 7, will debut a 7-inch Fonepad at Mobile World Congress later this month, according to sources familiar with the product.

Reports say the Fonepad may be priced in the same ballpark as -- or slightly higher than -- the Nexus 7 but below the MeMO Pad, which Asus launched Friday in Asia.

Leaked photos show it with an aluminum body and an Intel badge on the back.

My Facebook profile transformed into a 3D-printed monster

I can hold my Facebook profile in the palm of my hand. It's shaped like a pink butternut squash with a top hat, no arms, and a bit of blood dripping from its teeth.

This strange creature came about through the Creators Project, a globe-hopping initiative from Intel and Vice that supports artists working through technology. The initiative has been around since 2010, but the Facebook 3D-printable figures project just started this year.

The 3D-printable Facebook project can take three different forms. There's Monster Me, which turns out a little monster.
