Ripdev InstallerApp upgraded, installs Google Voice apps on jailbroken devices

Non-Apple-sponsored app stores and app-installers have hinted at threats to Apple's own iPhone's iTunes App Store. One of these, called InstallerApp, (previously covered on iPhone Atlas), was recently upgraded to version 1.1.

InstallerApp has seen a few improvements since we last looked at it. It now works on the upcoming Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, has removed unsupported Installer repositories, and gives more attention to jailbreak solutions using PwnageTool and redsn0w. Additionally, it supports packages from either Cydia or Icy iPhone apps that allow you to install more apps on your iPhone or iPod Touch, … Read more

Basic shortcut creator

eBay Icon Installer by Iconomize.com creates a shortcut to eBay on the user's desktop, allowing users to ensure that they are going to the authentic eBay site and not a fraudulent one. Although the application works well, it doesn't really do much that a user couldn't do on his or her own.

There is no real interface to speak of; once the program is installed, a shortcut is created on the desktop, and that's it. The icon consists of the eBay logo, and users click on it to go directly to eBay.com. There are … Read more

Clean up your desktop

Hazel is a flexible utility designed to help you tidy up files and folders--especially in your Downloads, Desktop, and Trash--and keep them organized with rules that you specify. You access Hazel through a System Preferences pane, where you can create Mail-style rules to execute a wide variety of actions. For example, Hazel's built-in sample rules include options for cleaning up your Downloads folder, such as automatically moving images and music into your Pictures and Music folders respectively. These sample rules only hint at Hazel's capabilities, though, and you can set the app to automatically import into iTunes and … Read more

Need That Latest HomeBrew App? Drag N Drop Or On Pre?

Many know that the process for getting homebrewed applications and games on their devices was not the easiest and consisted of either rooting your device (not beginner friendly)or by using the SDK back door method that I blogged about a couple days back. Now for those that don't want to do those methods there are two new ways, you can now either drag and drop or install straight from your device. Each way will need the SDK installed initially but will make the process smoother and quicker for future downloads. I cannot give enough credit and praise to Jason Robitaille and Brian Jost for all their hard work in this process. I have tested both methods and both work without troubles. For those users that have a X64 bit system or a vista machine there is a workaround for the process of getting the files to work in my previous blog from this one. I take no credit for these apps and wanted to share the ease of use with everyone and get the work out. This could be huge and I'm excited about this in many ways, not only will i be able to download and install applications and games on the go but this could also turn into an alternative app store for the Palm Pre right through Palmcentral.net. Without further ado here is the information and the tutorial on how to do so.… Read more

Installing Homebrew Apps Without Rooting Device (Firmware 1.04)

Thanks again to Sir Mycroft over at PalmCentral for the great tutorial on how to do this. I was skeptical since I have rooted devices in the past on whether this would fully work. I decided to help a buddy out and try this on his device and surprisingly it works without any troubles. I found that this tutorial is mainly for XP users but does include a workaround for the vista users as well as fellow X64 bit users. I have found this to be the easiest and quickest way to get those neat homebrew apps and games onto your device quickly and stress free. I would recommend this to any of the users that don't feel comfortable rooting their device to get homebrew apps on their devices. Sir Mycorft has put the following how-to guide together to let anyone who wishes to enjoy some of the fine homebrewed applications that are being produced by the members at Precentral. This guide should not be viewed as a way of derailing the efforts of other members to develop a packaged means of delivering applications to stock Pres. I certainly wish to encourage that development. This guide is instead meant to act as stop-gap measure for those who want the great apps being produced, but do not have the desire to root their Pres, and no longer have the option of exploiting the e-mail hole after the 1.0.4 WebOS update. The how-to guide is in plain English, and is extremely simple. You need not be a techie or hacker to get homebrewed applications onto your Pre. If you are able to download a program from the internet and drag and drop a file, you have what it takes to get these great programs up and running on your Pre. If you had the wherewithal to find this thread in Precentral and currently possess a desire to get the applications in the homebrew section, you can do this. You have my word on it.… Read more

Key-shaped USB drive solves my portable data dilemma

When my colleague Dong Ngo introduced us to the LaCie key-shaped USB drive back in March, the timing could not have been better, as I had just ended yet another frustrating relationship with a keychain-based USB key.

I've gotten into the habit of keeping a USB drive attached to my keys in the past year. Moving into a new laptop on the average of twice a week, I got tired of re-downloading all the software I'd want on a just-unboxed laptop, and decided to create a package of must-have install files, including FireFox, AVG Free, Open Office, etc. … Read more

Uninstall programs quickly

There comes the time in every computer program's life when it outlives its usefulness. Whenever this happens, uninstalling the program is the best option. MyUninstaller wants to be the tool for the job and promises more information and ease than Windows' built-in uninstaller.

This freeware jumps into action with an interface that is equally informative and simple to operate. The bulk of the program is dominated by a list of every program on your computer. Next to each icon and name is its version, the company that produced it, and a brief description of what the program does. Users … Read more

No key without registration

While this product key finder is simple and easy to use, it won't give away the primary information most users will be looking for if they need Office Key Changer.

Office Key Changer offers a sparse, bare-bones interface with only three functions. The two most important functions--finding and changing the Office product key--have been completely disabled in the demo version of the software. The only thing this program offers is a readout of the current version of Office installed. This task is just a couple of clicks away through the Start Menu without downloading any third-party software.

iPhone App installs over USB: Another threat to iTunes App Store?

Reports of non-Apple-sponsored app stores have hinted at threats to Apple's own iPhone's iTunes App Store. Now, another front in the war against the iTunes App Store may be developing: a new application, currently under development, will allow users to install iPhone and iPod Touch applications onto their jailbroken devices using a USB connection.

The app, called Installer, has been around for awhile and was originally created to install applications directly from your jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch desktop. Rip Dev recently upgraded that application, long popular, to version 4.1. However, a new version for the desktop … Read more

Installation monitor a real drag

ID Install Watch monitors your PC during the installation and removal of programs to ensure that all is running smoothly. But from the get-go our computer's performance slowed to a grinding halt, and the program itself froze on us.

The user interface has a professional design, with large command buttons running down the left side of the window for opening the installer watch, taking and comparing system snapshots, and exporting your findings to an XML file. Tabs separate your file and registry information. We first tried to take a system snapshot. A window appeared, but that's when the … Read more
