Boost, Virgin Mobile get first LTE smartphones

Sprint subsidiaries Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile finally joined the LTE wave today by acquiring their first devices compatible with Sprint's growing network. Though both carriers carry WiMax handsets, Sprint began phasing out that network in favor of LTE last year.

Virgin's Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE is another member of the company's ever-expanding Galaxy family. Its feature set shows that Virgin continues to up the ante on its smartphone lineup.

Running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, it has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 5-megapixel camera with HD video capture, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, … Read more

Camera shootout: HTC One vs. iPhone 5

Our friends at CNET Asia got their very lucky hands on an HTC One for a brief test drive with the device's promising new camera. Indeed, it's worthy test since the shooter is one of One's most interesting features.

Though the One's camera has a 4-megapixel resolution, that's not the whole story by any measure. As Brian Bennett wrote in his First Take earlier this week, the camera features an updated ImageSense system, new ImageChip 2 hardware, and a revamped light sensor. HTC says that UltraPixel Sensor will be able to create more detailed pixels. … Read more

HTC settles with FTC over software security vulnerabilities

Mobile handset maker HTC has agreed to settle a complaint filed against it by the Federal Trade Commission accusing the company of failing to take "reasonable steps" to patch a security flaw in software running on its smartphones.

As part of this settlement, HTC has agreed to patch handsets that were left vulnerable to the security risks. And the company has agreed to develop a security program to address future security issues on its handsets.

HTC has already begun rolling out the patches to devices in the U.S., according to the FTC.

In its complaint, the commission … Read more

HTC offering $100 credit for old phones with purchase of new HTC One

In case you don't know, HTC really wants you to buy its new HTC One.

So much so that the company is willing to pay you at least $100 for your old handset should you opt for its flagship device.

Sounds great, right? Well, as you'd expect, you have to read the fine print. Instead of a crisp $100 bill, HTC will give you a Prepaid Visa Card worth $100 or the trade-in value of a used cell phone, whichever is greater. The deal, obviously designed to drum up interest in the new Android phone, runs through March … Read more

Key Apple supplier Foxconn slows down its hiring

Apple supplier Foxconn said it is temporarily slowing down recruitment in its factories in China. The move comes amid questions about the enduring demand for the iPhone 5.

A Foxconn representative said in an e-mailed statement to CNET that the decision was "due to an unprecedented rate of return of employees following the Chinese New Year holiday compared to years past."

However, the Financial Times reported a more drastic move -- a hiring freeze -- and attributed it to fewer orders for the iPhone 5.

Foxconn denied that the move was related to any single customer and added … Read more

HTC One takes display pixel density crown

The HTC One has taken the pixel density crown, leaving phones like Retina iPhone 5 in the dust.

First, to get a sense of the HTC One screen's density, a quick comparison to Microsoft's Surface Pro, which has also been praised for its display chops, puts this into perspective.

The Surface Pro packs a resolution of 1,920x1,080 into a 10.6-inch panel. One of the highest pixel densities (208 pixels per inch, to be exact) for a Windows 8 PC to date.

The HTC One packs that same resolution (1,920x1,080) into a 4.7-inch … Read more

HTC One puts ultrapixels over megapixels

There can only be one CNET Update:

Tuesday's tech news roundup looks into the HTC One, the company's new flagship smartphone. To help HTC stand out again, the One has an aluminum body, a redesigned Sense interface, and an animated photo mode called Zoe. Most notable is the rear camera with 4 megapixels -- but HTC uses the term "ultrapixels" because the photos can pick up more light. Most top smartphones boast 8-megapixel cameras, but HTC says megapixels are a misunderstood metric for consumers. The HTC One will be available in March at AT&T, … Read more

HTC One looks great. But will anyone care?

As sexy as the HTC One is, it is doomed to failure if the company doesn't quickly shake things up.

HTC's design and software teams did their jobs in creating an attractive, unique, and premium-feeling phone, taking Apple's love for metal construction and taking it to the next logical progression.

But guess what? HTC's One family of phones met with similar critical praise last year, yet failed to reverse its flagging revenue and profits. While HTC has had a history of showing off buzz-worthy products, dating back to the first Android smartphone in the G1 and … Read more

HTC One specs take on Droid DNA, iPhone 5, Z10

HTC's brand-new flagship smartphone, the HTC One, is a gorgeous piece of all-aluminum smartphone machinery by any standards. CNET's Brian Bennett went hands-on with the Android Jelly Bean phone before today's launch event.

With dual audio speakers, a new Beats Audio feature in BoomSound, and a rebooted version of the HTC Sense interface layer that includes a new element called Blink, and an IR blaster to act as a TV remote, the HTC One certainly packs some interesting extras.

HTC's flagship device should appear in the U.S. in March for T-Mobile, AT&T, and … Read more

HTC One aims to make good first impression with all-metal body

Take that, Apple.

HTC believes it has one-upped its competition -- including the marquee iPhone 5 -- with its latest flagship smartphone. The HTC One features an all-aluminum construction that the company believes will set the phone apart at retail stores.

"This takes premium to the next level," Scott Croyle, HTC's design guru, said in an interview with CNET. "It feels more premium than anything I've felt out in the market."

Croyle talked about the importance of making a good first impression with consumers, something that has become critical with HTC's competitors all … Read more
