Apple's iPad outselling Samsung's own tablets in Korea

Apple's iPad is giving Samsung's tablets a run for their money even in Samsung's home base of Korea.

Sales of the iPad are estimated to have topped 1 million in Korea since the tablet debuted in the country in November 2010, according to the Korea Herald. Last year's sales alone hit around 700,000.

And since many Koreans bought the iPad before it was available locally, the total could be much higher than 1 million, noted the Herald.

Samsung is shy about releasing actual sales figures. But the iPad's share of the Korean market is … Read more

Revised Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 cleared for sale in Germany

Another day, another German court ruling over whether Samsung can sell a device within the country's borders.

Earlier today, a court in Dusseldorf ruled that Samsung could sell its Galaxy Tab 10.1N in Germany, rebuffing calls by Apple to ban the device from sale because of patent infringement. The court told the companies, according to Reuters, which was in attendance at the hearing, that there were "clear differences" between the Galaxy Tab 10.1N and the iPad.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1N should be not be confused with the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The "N&… Read more

Sprint's $99 ZTE Optik pushes the cheap tablet envelope

ZTE and Sprint hope their new $99 Optik tablet's rock bottom price can lure buyers eyeing the Kindle Fire.

Amazon certainly created a hit with its low-cost $199 Kindle Fire, which aggressively undercut the iPad 2's steep $499 starting price. Now Chinese electronics maker ZTE has stepped up to try to burn the Fire at its own game. With a much-reduced $99 sticker price and February 5 availability, the 7-inch slate runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb, plus two HD cameras (5-megapixel rear, 2-megapixel front).

I do like that the Optik's display has a sharper resolution (1,280 by 800 pixels) than the premium Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (1,024 by 600 pixels), another compelling 7-inch Honeycomb tablet. Of course the Tab uses an LCD with Plane Line Switching (PLS), which typically offer higher contrast and wider viewing angles than their standard LCD cousins. No word yet on just what type of LCD the Optik ships with. … Read more

German court rejects Apple bid to ban Galaxy phone, tablet

Apple's attempt to keep Samsung from selling its Galaxy 10.1N tablet and Galaxy Nexus smartphone in the country was rejected today.

"Samsung has shown that it is more likely than not that the patent will be revoked because of a technology that was already on the market before the intellectual property had been filed for protection," said Munich Regional Court Judge Andreas Mueller, according to Bloomberg.

Apple originally took aim at Samsung's devices--particularly the Tab--for bearing resemblence to its own products. Apple won an early injunction against Samsung's tablet in the country, forcing it … Read more

German appeals court keeps Galaxy Tab 10.1 out of stores

Samsung has been dealt another blow in Germany.

The Higher Regional Court in Dusseldorf today upheld an earlier injunction, requested by Apple and imposed by a lower court on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, saying that the tablet violates a German anti-competition statute. In addition, the court said that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is also in violation of the law.

FOSS Patents today was first to report on the ruling.

In September, Judge Joahnna Brueckner-Hoffman ruled that there is a "clear impression of similarity" between Apple's iPad and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and … Read more
