Casio megazoom has extreme battery life

Casio joined the list of manufacturers with a pocketable megazoom Thursday with the announcement of the EX-H10. In retail around mid-July, the $299.99 12-megapixel camera is fronted by a wide-angle 24mm lens with a 10x zoom with CCD-shift image stabilization in a body that's 0.96 inch thick and weighs only 5.8 ounces. Even more impressive, though, is Casio's battery life claim of a 1,000 shots on a single charge.

That number comes courtesy of low-energy requirements of the the multi-CPU Exilim Engine 4.0 circuitry and operational controls coupled with a high-capacity battery. Usage is based on CIPA standards calculated with the LCD monitor on; a full zoom back and forth every 30 seconds; the flash used every two shots; and the power cycled every 10 shots.

Underneath it all it's still a typical Casio camera, too, with a gazillion Best Shot scene modes (OK, just 38, but that's still a ridiculous amount), high-speed shutter continuous shooting, and 720p HD movie capture at 24fps.… Read more

Intel, IBM discuss 8-core 'Nehalem' server chip

Intel on Tuesday said it will ship a server chip that contains up to eight processing cores later this year, while IBM showed off a high-end server in the works that uses eight such chips, yielding 64 cores.

Intel's Nehalem-EX processor, in production later this year and expected to be shipping in high-end server systems by early 2010, will feature up to eight cores inside a single chip that supports 16 threads, according to Boyd Davis, Intel's general manager of the Server Platforms Marketing Group, speaking at a teleconference on Tuesday.

Cisco reveals new initative for mobile markets

Mobile workers today still face challenges in bouncing from wired to wireless to cellular workspaces. Cisco believes it may have a solution.

The networking giant on Tuesday announced a new initiative called Collaboration in Motion, designed to help workers on the go by integrating different services for the mobile market.

Collaboration in Motion will bring together a variety of products from Cisco's network portfolio. The mix includes Cisco's WebEx virtual meeting tool, its Unified Communications platform, the Cisco Unified Wireless Network, and Cisco Advanced Services for technical support. Intel to detail 8-core server chip

Updated at 10:00 a.m. PDT with correction about launch of Nehalem-EX processor.

Intel is expected to announce details of an 8-core processor for the high-end server market next week.

The chip itself will not actually ship in systems until late 2009 or early 2010.

The 8-core "Nehalem-EX" Xeon processor is designed for servers that can use more than two processors (referred to as "sockets" in server argot). Currently, Intel is shipping Nehalem Xeon processors for servers with two sockets.

Nehalem is the same architecture used in Intel's Core i7 desktop processor line.

Casio FH20: It's all about the high speed

This is a test clip of some birds that I took using the Casio Exilim EX-FH20's high-speed video capture. (I know it's not the most exciting clip in the world, unless you're into watching 6 minutes of birds bathing in public, you sicko.) This feature is really pretty cool (as is the camera's 40-frame-per-second shooting speed), though I'm still on the fence about how much someone would actually use it after the initial "wow, this is cool" phase.

Cisco puts more security in the cloud

SAN FRANCISCO--Cisco is set to make several cloud-related security announcements at the RSA conference on Tuesday, including the expansion of its hosted security services and the integration of security-as-a-service applications with corporate network infrastructures.

The new products include Cisco Security Cloud Services, Cisco IPS Sensor Software 7.0 for intrusion prevention, and Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance 5500 Series 8.2 software with a botnet traffic filter for identifying infected clients and remote access capabilities.

When Rolls-Royce unveiled its new model to the public at the 2009 Geneva auto show, its badge read "200EX Concept." Internally, it's known as the RR4. However, neither RR4 or 200EX are monikers befitting a vehicle the follows the Spirit of Ecstasy everywhere it goes. So what will Rolls-Royce call its smaller, stronger model?

Wi-Ex shows new cell phone signal boosters

Wi-Ex, the manufacturer of the zBoost line of cell phone signal boosters, announced two new products at CTIA.

Though we didn't get the chance to check them out while in Las Vegas, we can pass on the details.

The zBoost One is the company's first one-piece signal booster. It promises an easy setup process that consists of just plugging it in and syncing it to your phone. It's compatible with the 1900 CDMA and GSM band for both phones and data cards.
