At Google, doodling is real work

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--They've celebrated Pac-Man's anniversary, Einstein's birthday, the World Cup, the Fourth of July, Persian New Year, the Olympics, U.S. elections, and just about everything in between. Who are they? Google's Doodlers, of course.

A band of artists whose job it is to translate special events into those colorful, whimsical versions of Google's corporate logo, the Doodlers almost certainly have one of the best jobs in the world.

This team's members mix artistic skills with an ability to fit into Google's culture--meaning they can speak engineering and hold their own … Read more

iPhone game players jump for doodle jump

Watch CBS News Videos Online

From prime-time sitcoms to late-night TV to a fashion accessory for pop stars, Doodle Jump is everywhere, CBS News Correspondent Jeff Glor reports.

"It's addicting," one New Yorker said.

So what is it?

"It's just a very lovable little character," Igor Pusenjak, Doodle Jump's creator, said.

It's the brainchild of Pusenjak and his brother Marko Pusenjak, immigrants from Croatia. Last April, they had an idea inspired by their own, well, doodling. Their four-legged cartoon creation is always jumping up, guided by players' hands, avoiding the bad monsters and UFOs and reaching the good trampolines.

Fifteen months later, it's a cultural craze, and Igor Pusenjak said it's made him a lot of money.

The game just passed the 5 million download mark for Apple's iPhone, and since the brothers get 70 percent of profits, that's $3.5 million. … Read more

Google gets Pac-Man fever

Saturday is the 30th anniversary of the release of Pac-Man, and to commemorate the occasion, Google is rolling out its first-ever truly interactive and playable home page logo, a fully-functional version of the iconic 1980s video game.

For years, Google has produced its so-called doodles for all kinds of holidays and special occasions, from Valentine's Day to the Fourth of July to Mother's Day and many others. In each case, the Google Doodle team works on a special logo that appears on the search engine's home page.

But a few months ago, when the team discovered that … Read more

Google doodles a Rockwell

While Google continues on its march toward the difficult marriage of omnipotence and righteousness, its choices of birthdays to celebrate become ever more eclectic and lovable.

Google has already created visual remembrances of artists such as Andy Warhol and Edvard Munch and Rene Magritte. And on Wednesday, the search engine's home page enjoyed the decoration of "Little Spooners," a painting by Norman Rockwell, who would have been 116 on February 3, had he not succumbed to emphysema in 1978.

Rockwell's work captured an America in which people seemed happy, purposeful, and actually liked each other. This … Read more

Google doodle animates Newton's apples

Google's business side is becoming ever more robust, and ever more, well, business-like. But its doodles are becoming ever more charming, whimsical even. And now, ever more animated.

This heartwarming piece comes as the world organizes parties beneath apple trees to celebrate the birth of Sir Isaac Newton. Sir Isaac, one of the developers of differential calculus and, you know, the first Apple tablet, would have been 367 years old on January 4, 2010.

So Google, at its heart an engineering concern, not only offers us the branches of an apple tree, but, if you wait, an apple gently … Read more

Scammers exploit Google Doodle to spread malware

Online scammers are taking advantage of the public's interest in the Google Doodle to spread malware, a security firm warned on Tuesday.

In so-called "SEO poisoning," scammers use search engine optimization techniques to increase the distribution of malware. They create special malware-rigged Web sites or hide malware on legitimate Web sites they've compromised and then use tags associated with popular search terms to get them listed high up in search engine results.

Typically, scammers capitalize on public interest in news events or celebrities, targeting searches like "Swine Flu" or "Michael Jackson death." … Read more

Google's crop circle doodle suggests finality

It has been said, not least by senior people at Google, that the company dreams of the day when we have Google search implanted in our brains.

Some, mainly human beings, chuckled at the prospect. Perhaps they should stop chuckling.

It must be very difficult to stay interested when you're running the world's largest small ad company, so the appearance of a couple of alien-related doodles suggest that Google's management has finally spaced out.

The latest doodle, which appeared Tuesday, reveals a similar spacecraft to the one that supposedly commemorated the Japanese video game Zero Wing. However, … Read more

DoInk lets you draw, animate in your browser

DoInk is a free online drawing and animation tool that runs right in your browser. You can treat it like Microsoft Paint and use it to do just a quick doodle, or take advantage of its layer cloning and vector-based designs to create relatively advanced animations.

I chose the latter, and put together a pretty slick looking animation in just a few minutes. Adding additional frames is simple and intuitive, and the app saves everything you're working on in the background (and in the cloud) so there are no local files to worry about. You can also hop between … Read more

Cowon goes red, upgrades firmware, and drops prices

Cowon just keeps showering us with good news. Earlier I reported on the U.S. release of the Cowon iAudio 7, and now I've got photos of the latest red version of the Cowon D2. The red D2 was given a very soft launch here in the United States and appears to have been available directly and through a few online retailers for the past several weeks. To sweeten the deal, Cowon has dropped prices on some models of the D2, U3, F2, and A2 by around $10 to $20.

The cherry on top is a new firmware upgrade … Read more
