Computex: Roundup of hottest Windows 8 devices

One of the reasons Windows 8 is a big deal is the promise of newfangled devices that span laptop and tablet design. Here are some the hottest appearing at Computex in Taipei so far.

Asus more than any single PC maker is pointing the way toward this brave new device world with the Taichi, a dual-screen Windows 8 ultrabook sporting an extra tablet-mode display on the back of the display panel.

And that screen is no ordinary display: it boasts a resolution of 1,920x1,080: that's a lot of pixels for an 11.6-inch tablet screen. And there'… Read more

Silly Asus makes sexist tweet

Sometimes, when the obvious joke lurches into your head, it's best not to be in possession of instant publishing tools.

However, those tools seem to have been far too readily available to someone at Asus.

For today, the very fine electronics manufacturer that likes to be known for "Inspiring Innovation" seems to have reached for the humor of a perspiring Neanderthal.

I am grateful to Gizmodo for explaining that Asus had tweeted a picture of a comely lady from behind. She was holding a fine new Asus machine. The accompanying text read: "The rear looks pretty … Read more

Dual-screen Taichi leads lineup of unique Asus Windows 8 PCs

TAIPEI, Taiwan--Windows 8, we've been told, is going to move Microsoft into the post-PC era. And a bevy of new PC designs that Asus debuted here at the Computex trade show is bringing that vision to reality.

The Taiwanese PC manufacturer has take the wraps off three new product lines -- a dual-screen ultrabook, a semiportable all-in-one desktop, and a convertible laptop with a removable keyboard -- that build on the lessons of the company's Transformer line of Android tablets.

Taichi: Tablet, ultrabook, or both? First up from Asus was the Taichi hybrid notebook/tablet, which was … Read more

Asus to bring Android to Windows with BlueStacks

Asus has revealed a new partnership at Computex today to make its computers more Android-friendly. By teaming with BlueStacks (download), which makes an "app player" for running Android apps on Windows, the company will make Android apps available on 30 million Windows computers around the world.

"Asus has always been an innovator, and this is a big move for the space," BlueStacks' Chief Executive Officer Rosen Sharma wrote in an e-mail to CNET. "Thirty million computers running mobile apps is a lot, but it's just the beginning."

Asus will include BlueStacks in its … Read more

Asus, Acer, Toshiba to unveil Windows 8, RT tablets

Asus, Acer, and Toshiba will roll out a mix of tablets based on both Windows 8 and Windows RT at the hardware-centric Computex trade show next week, according to Bloomberg.

Windows 8 will run on chips from Intel, while Windows RT is powered by ARM chips from Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments.

One Asus tablet uses an Nvidia chip, said Bloomberg. CNET reported earlier in the month that Asus and Lenovo are expected to bring out Windows RT tablets built around Nvidia Tegra 3 chips.

A Windows RT-based Toshiba tablet is using Texas Instruments' silicon, according to Bloomberg.

Purported Google tablet benchmark points to Tegra 3, 7-inch screen

Another day, another hint that Google will be launching an Asus co-branded tablet.

This time around, a benchmark for a Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet has surfaced on Rightware's Web site. Rightware, which is perhaps best known for its mobile Kanzi user interface, lists the slate as an Android-based device featuring a 7-inch display with 1280x768 resolution.

According to Rightware's data, power shouldn't be much of an issue for Google's tablet. The benchmark indicates that the device is running the 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor and comes with Nvidia's ULP GeForce GPU.

Asus VG23AH review: A passive 3D fail

With an In-Plane Switching (IPS) screen, a useful assortment of connections and ergo options, and a price at around $300, the VG23AH might sound like a monitor worthy of praise.

New 27-inch Dell all-in-one matches iMac pixel for pixel

HP and Asus released the first 27-inch Windows-based all-in-ones this year, but with 1,920x,1,080-pixel resolution screens, they failed to match Apple's high-density, 2,560x1,440 iMacs. Dell's new XPS One 27 does.

Dell says the starting price for the new XPS One 27 is $1,399. That puts it ahead of the $1,249 HP Omni 27, but on par with the Asus ET2700I. All are also at least $300 below the most affordable 27-inch iMac.

At least for now, those other 27-inch all-in-ones also all use second-generation Intel Core CPUs, aka Sandy Bridge. The XPS One 27 has third-generation Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs, aka Ivy Bridge.… Read more

Google is set to unveil its long-rumored tablet at its I/O conference next month, according to a new report.

Citing a "trusted source," technology site TechnoBuffalo said the search giant will show off the device at its conference, which kicks off June 27, and give a unit to every developer in attendance.

As for the unit itself, TechnoBuffalo's source said it'll come with Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 3 chip, and has been developed, as reported previously, with help from Asus. TechnoBuffalo couldn't confirm which operating system will be running on the device, but it … Read more
