HTC: Hero, Droid Eris getting Android 2.1 update

BARCELONA, Spain--In addition to introducing two new Android phones, HTC revealed on Tuesday that it will release an Android 2.1 update for the HTC Droid Eris as well as the Sprint and GSM versions of the HTC Hero.

The company said the devices should be getting most of the features of Android 2.1 as well as the enhanced HTC Sense user experience that was announced today. However, it will ultimately be up to the carriers to determine which features make it onto the device. Unfortunately, HTC did not give any time frame for when the update might be … Read more

Motorola now says Android 2.1 coming soon for Droid, not this week

Looks like we've got another case of someone pulling the trigger a little too early. After posting a Facebook update on Monday stating that an Android 2.1 update would be coming to Droid owners this week, Motorola is now backtracking and saying that it's coming soon.

The bad news came when a Motorola Owners' Forum manager said on Wednesday that the company "jumped the gun" on posting details of the update, which have now been removed from the forum and Moto support site. Motorola didn't have any more to say, other than a rollout … Read more

A library of errors

Absolute Media Library is a basic program for keeping track of all types of collections. Although it offers a lot of options for organization, its incessant error messages make it hard to like.

The program's interface is simple, and although it's not the most intuitive, it's easy enough to figure out. You can enter media of all sorts, specifying format, genre, value, and other details. In addition to keeping an inventory of items, you can create a database of borrowers and keep track of items that get loaned out, which is a nice feature to have in … Read more

Google releases Android 2.1 SDK after complaints

Google has released the software development kit for Android 2.1, the version of its mobile operating system that powers the Nexus One smartphone.

When the Nexus One was launched a week ago, developers complained that they had not been given the SDK, making it impossible for them to test their applications for compatibility with the new OS version. The handset is the first to use Android 2.1.

Google introduced the software development kit on Monday, describing the new OS version as a "minor platform release."

Altec Lansing VS4621 does 2.1 PC audio in style

LAS VEGAS--As any gamer or music fan knows, your computer's built-in speaker are utter bunk and the more-affordable PC speaker upgrades typically lack in low-end power. To fill the void of booming PC speakers for under a Benjamin, Altec Lansing is gearing up to release its VS4621 2.1 PC speaker system in the Spring, with a down-to-earth retail price of $79.

Like its predecessor, the VS4121, the new system features a pair of stylish and slim stereo speakers that connect to an impressive-looking powered subwoofer. The sub sports a 6.5-inch driver in a ported enclosure, while the … Read more

Android 2.1 coming to Sprint HTC Hero, Samsung Moment

On Thursday, Sprint revised a tweet it sent out last week regarding an Android update for the Samsung Moment and HTC Hero. Both smartphones won't be getting an Android 2.0 update; instead, they will get Android 2.1. (Pause for applause.)

The carrier made the announcement via its Twitter account, but unfortunately didn't provide any more specific details as to when the updates might be rolled out other than it would be sometime in the first half of 2010.

Currently, only the Nexus One is running Android 2.1. While features of this version of the operating … Read more

Photogene for iPhone: Pros and cons (video)

We've long been fans of Photogene, a $2.99 image editor for iPhone and iPod Touch that faces heavy rivalry from apps like the free Photoshop Mobile for iPhone. We figured it's time to take a closer look.

While Photogene offers a lot to like, there's still room for improvement. We outline the pros and cons in this First Look video.

Mediocre organizer

Dolphinity Organiser is a sleek program for organizing both personal and business projects. It's not particularly intuitive, especially if you haven't already used similar programs, but it functions well enough as a basic organizer.

The program's interface is quite attractive and is reminiscent of Microsoft Office 2007 products. While Dolphinity Organiser is fairly easy to navigate, it wasn't immediately obvious what the program did. Terms like "group," "todo," and "task" seem simple on the surface but are actually somewhat vague. It turns out that users create groups and subgroups; for … Read more

21st century filing cabinet

"If anything happens to us, everything you need is in the filing cabinet in the basement," our parents would always remind us before leaving on a trip. MyInfosafe is the 21st century version of that filing cabinet, a repository for all your most important--and sensitive--personal information.

The program's interface is sleek and fairly intuitive, and we found it very easy to use. We were also impressed with its many features. Sure, it can keep track of important documents like wills and powers of attorney (even allowing you to attach scanned copies of them), but the program also … Read more

Challenging numbers puzzle

JsiSudoku offers challenges for sudoku players of all skill levels. Simple gameplay and even simpler graphics equate to a challenging experience you could spend hours on.

The game's intuitive interface and gameplay was easy for us to learn, though we did need to visit the Help file's instructions to clarify a few of the rules of sudoku. This was the program's first correct step, since we've often tested games without directions on how to actually play. The program functioned just like the paper version of this game, where we had to input numbers into a grid … Read more
