A must-have for Diigo users

Fans of Diigo will appreciate the instant access and extras found in the Diigo Toolbar. It has all you need to utilize and stay connected to your account.

Diigo Toolbar lets you sign into your account from a drop-down menu, giving you access to the straightforward buttons. You won't find standard toolbar features, such as a pop-up blocker or weather forecast, but you can opt to remove some of the toolbar buttons or add a few advanced features, such as a filter or keyboard shortcuts. Though a Help feature is included on the Diigo site, we didn't need … Read more

A very accessible user interface and detailed user guidance and information are the hallmarks of this system utility that serves as an alternative to Windows' Task Manager.

Site Launcher turns bookmarks into shortcuts

Firefox extension Site Launcher (download) lets you replace your bookmarks toolbar with an overlay window of links that can be pulled up at any time using a simple keyboard shortcut. You pick which sites you want on the list, and a one-letter keyboard shortcut is given to each. When pulled up, you simply hit the key for the site you want and it goes straight to it. Once you've memorized which sites are on your list, you can make use of an alternate key combination that lets you skip to each site without having to view the menu at … Read more

Handy tab management tool

This handy little add-on falls under the category of tools you never knew you needed, but find extremely useful once you try it. Tab Scope conveniently lets you navigate all of your tabs without having to click back and forth between them.

When you hover your mouse over a tab, Tab Scope displays a small preview window that represents the tab's current Web page. Just like a browser, the preview window contains navigational buttons for moving forward and backward, refreshing the page, zooming in, and stopping the page load. The Options menu gives you control over the window size, … Read more

Dell regroups around four customer segments

Computer maker Dell reorganized its global management structure to focus on four customer groups, and some executives are out of a job, the company said Wednesday.

The company's consumer business already is a global operation, but now three other groups will follow suit: those for big business customers, government customers, and small- and medium-size business customers.

"We have laid the foundation for the transition from a global business that's run regionally to businesses that are really globally organized," Chairman and CEO Michael Dell said in a statement. "Customer requirements are increasingly being defined by how … Read more

Futzing with features: Firefox add-ons in 2008

As performance reasserts its prominence and features become less of the driving force behind browsers, I find myself looking at the list of inactive extensions in Firefox with jaundiced eyes. It's been months since I've added a new extension, but the ones I still have I use regularly, and several are actually new to me for this year.

Part of the problem with add-ons is that they're such a personal, subjective thing. What do you need? Why do you need it? One of my favorites is a minor, tiny thing, but it saves me so much time … Read more

Speak and you shall receive

This stellar voice-transcription application does more than search the Web or place a call in response to your spoken command. Vlingo lets you get specific, searching Google or Yahoo and updating your Facebook and Twitter status. You can also launch applications, write notes to yourself, and verbally compose a text or e-mail message.

The set-up is a little laborious, and Vlingo does have a learning curve, but the step-by-step instructions help you program a fast access key that works like a record button, and the help file is a good, easily access reminder of what you can say and do. … Read more

Flickr overhauls its contact management tool

Flickr rolled out a big update to its inter-network content manager on Thursday afternoon. It now lets you sort by contact type, total number of photos, when you added them as a contact, and when their last upload was. This last option might be one of the most useful, since it can tell you who signed up for the service then abandoned it completely, making it easy to clear out some space.

The one thing that hasn't changed is the option to see more than a few contacts per page. The current cap is just 15 to a page, … Read more
