Cloud storage is popping up everywhere lately, and businesses are scrambling to fill niches. While the Amazon Cloud Drive looks like a solid contender to take over the streaming-media territory, its cost (and potential legal issues) drive many users to look elsewhere. MiMedia, which started out as a cloud backup service, has added a simple media player to its 7GB of free storage to create a virtual MP3 player usable on any Web-enabled device. Here's how to get started:Start a free account with MiMedia and install the application (currently Windows-only, with a Mac version promised for the near … Read more

Just more than two years ago, Dell introduced one of its most unlikely products ever. The Adamo laptop was stylish, it was expensive, and it wasn't around that long. The product was killed less than two years after its very splashy debut.
On Tuesday, Dell is set to announce the XPS 15Z, a $999 laptop that is in many ways a descendant of the Adamo. While the XPS 15Z lacks the same daring design and sleek profile, it's much more in line with what people have come to expect from Dell nowadays: some thoughtful style, decent quality, but … Read more

This week I cleared Vista out of my home office by upgrading a 6-year-old PC to Windows 7. The machine was in dire need of a tune-up. I figured the money spent on a Win 7 upgrade would extend the desktop PC's life span and save me hours of system maintenance time.
When I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, the program warned me that the machine's ATI Radeon Xpress 200 display driver and Realtek Audio Manager utility were out-of-date. The PC was otherwise good to go, which was a pleasant surprise considering it shipped in 2005 with … Read more
Hewlett-Packard has said its touchscreen tablet will be available sometime this summer. But for how much, when, and where?
We might now have partial answers to those questions.
The blog Pre Central has an internal Wal-Mart document that indicates it plans to be one of the retailers that will sell the HP TouchPad. The retailer's system shows a 32GB TouchPad with Wi-Fi at a price of $599.
The document also lists accessories for the device: the Touchstone dock at $79.88, a WebOS Bluetooth keyboard for $69.88, an HP-made case for $49.88, and an AC charger for $29.88.
The $599 price point for the 32GB with Wi-Fi version makes sense. It's also exactly what the TouchPad's chief competition, Apple's 32GB iPad 2 with Wi-Fi only, goes for.
HP first introduced the tablet in February, the first major new product resulting from its purchase of Palm.
The TouchPad has a 9.7-inch touch screen, weighs 1.6 pounds, is 13.7 millimeters thick, and comes in 16GB or 32GB of storage. Inside is a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a gyroscope, and an accelerometer. … Read more

A new malware infection has apparently been spreading relatively rapidly among Mac users, and it's unclear both how pervasive the infection is and whether Apple is addressing the problem. What is known, however, is how to get rid of it.
What is it? Most often called MacDefender, but also known as MacProtector and MacSecurity, this bit of malware is a socially engineered threat of a type that's more familiar to Windows users. It often starts with a Web advertisement that suckers you into downloading a rogue antivirus program, which purports to protect you. In fact, once installed it … Read more
