Sony Ericsson releases plenty of accessories

Not content to rest easy after its announcement of a slew of new cell phones and a Bluetooth watch, Sony Ericsson has also announced several new accessories as well. They are all music-related in some way or another, starting off with the MDS-65 Music Desk Stand, which acts as a portable speaker of sorts for your Sony Walkman phone, and the MMR-70 FM transmitter for playing music on a nearby FM radio.

And what's a cell phone accessory announcement without a few headsets? The HBH-DS200 is the only stereo Bluetooth headset in the group, and it has a few … Read more

Thank you for voting! Especially all you teenage girls.

User voting for the Webware 100 awards closed this morning. Thanks to everyone who voted!

We will announce the winners next week, on June 18, if all goes according to plan. We're going to use the week to write up the winners and go through our voting database to make sure all the votes are legit.

Meantime, some early observations: There were 489,467 votes cast in the Webware 100. The most popular category was Community, due in large part to the overwhelming number of votes cast for the teen social network, Gaia Online. In the entertainment category, Stardoll, … Read more

Webware 100 update: voting opens in a week

For the past few days, Josh and I have been buried in Webware 100 nominations. We've gone through the 5,000-plus entries and whittled them down to about 2,000 qualifying candidates, and we are now extracting the 250 finalists that we are going to put on the ballot for the Webware 100 in a week.

It's been a gratifying process so far. Looking at all the nominees in a big pool has validated, for me, the need not just for these awards but also for the Webware blog itself. Although there is a ton of creativity pouring … Read more

Webware 100 nominations closing in 3... 2... 1...

Nominations for the Webware 100 (about), our user-generated awards program, will close tonight at midnight Pacific time. If you have a favorite Web 2.0 site or service, now is the time to get your nominations recorded.

Once nominations are closed, Webware editors will narrow the field to 250 services (25 in each of the ten categories), and then on May 18 we'll open the awards program up to user voting.

A few housekeeping details for these last few hours of nominations:

Where the nomination form asks for "The pitch," it also asks that the entries contain … Read more

Keeping tabs on the $100-plus laptop

Thursday's briefing by Nicholas Negroponte on the One Laptop Per Child initiative seems to have meant different things to different folks.

The Associated Press led with the rising price of the laptop, designed for school-age tots in developing nations ("'$100 laptop' to cost $175"), while the Reuters news agency focused on the potential for use closer to home ("U.S. schools may join inexpensive laptop project"). And The Boston Globe, for which the just-across-the-Charles-River OLPC is in part a local business story, got caught up with the laptop's sense of fun, style and mission (&… Read more

Webware 100 stats: Too many social nets

Thanks to Webware's readers, there are now nearly 1,000 Web 2.0 services lined up for the Webware 100. That's enough to spot a few trends.

For instance: we have too many community-based startups. A full 23% of our nominations are in the Community category. There's a big takeaway from this for people building Web 2.0 companies: if you're thinking of launching yet another social network, please think again.

Of the 10 awards categories, the most underrepresented is Mobile. While it is true that it's much harder to create a winning business based … Read more

Watch out for Bluetooth

Sony Ericsson tends to be serious about Bluetooth and has never been satisfied with producing a simple line of wireless headsets. Granted, some of these products haven't made a whole lot of sense (remember the Bluetooth remote control car?).

Others, like the HCB 300 Bluetooth car kit are indeed functional. Yet the company's MBW-100 Bluetooth Watch is a little harder to classify. It goes beyond entertainment and definitely serves a purpose, but we're still not sure if it's really necessary.

When paired with a Bluetooth phone (it doesn't have to be a Sony Ericsson model), … Read more

100,000 standalone HD DVD players sold in U.S.

Just got an e-mail from the PR firm representing HD DVD, and the North American HD DVD Promotional Group has announced that "sales of dedicated HD DVD consumer electronics players reached more than 100K units sold in the United States, ahead of any other high definition format." I'm not sure why, but that figure doesn't include sales of HD DVD PC drives or the Xbox 360 HD DVD player, which the group says, "are also selling strongly."

I presume that Team HD DVD may not want to compare total HD DVD hardware sales to … Read more
