SlingPlayer coming to PalmOS

Sling Media is makin' the rounds: first Windows Mobile, then Symbian. Now Palm OS users can sling--or placeshift--their own channels to their smart phone.

This is good news for Slingbox owners who also have a Treo 700p, which utilizes Verizon's EV-DO network. Treo 680 users will be able to sling their TV as well, but Sling cautions that the EDGE network it runs on is not an ideal connection.

But that's not all: SlingPlayer will also be pre-loaded onto all HP laptops in 2007 as part of the QuickPlay feature, which plays music, movies, and now TV, … Read more

Palm and Cingular officially launch Palm Treo 750

Well, well, well, looky here: CES 2007 hasn't even officially started, and we already have a hot little product announcement: the Palm Treo 750 for Cingular. Actually, as per usual, this news wasn't much of a secret; details of the release leaked onto the Web prior to the show. Plus, we were expecting to see this Windows-based Treo drop before the holidays, but after delays with carrier certification, the launch was pushed back till after the new year, and CES is certainly the place to debut it (after all, it served as the backdrop for the Treo 700wRead more

Palm Treo 750 to launch on Cingular soon?

For all you last-minute holiday shoppers, your procrastination may have paid off. The Boy Genius Report says demo units of the Palm Treo 750 have started arriving at Cingular stores, which could mean an official release is imminent. It's been rumored for some time that the smart phone would hit in Q4 2006, but still, there are no details about specific availability dates or pricing.

As a refresher, the Treo 750 is the U.S. variant of the Palm Treo 750v, which was released in Europe in October this year. It runs Windows Mobile 5 and sports the new, … Read more

Cingular to sell Treo 680 on Nov. 24

The Palm Treo 680 will debut on Cingular Wireless as we're all recovering from gorging ourselves on turkey and stuffing.

It's official: beginning November 24, you can get yourself a Treo in a color besides boring graphite or arctic blue because now you can choose crimson or copper, too. (Oops, that rhymed. Sorry.) The lowest-cost Treo yet, it is priced (with a contract, of course) at $199.

The smartphone was officially announced on October 12, prompting speculation as to which carrier would have first dibs on it. I'll remind you all that fellow Crave expert Bonnie ChaRead more

Shocking: Palm's secret product still a secret

Way back in March, Palm cofounder Jeff Hawkins alluded to the fact that he was working on a mysterious third product category for the company, but we really haven't heard much about it since. (And frankly, that's quite a feat given Palm's horrible record of keeping its product announcements a secret, but I digress.) However, yesterday, a former vice president of product planning at Palm, Michael Mace, asked Palm CEO Ed Colligan if the project was still a go, and though he was quick to move on to the next question, Colligan said yes. You can read … Read more

A mouse for cold-blooded animals

We don't get it: Do people's hands really get that cold on the keyboard? In the last few days alone, a plethora of hand-warming products have appeared on various blogs, including one here on Crave that would be the envy of everyone at the soup kitchen.

Prolific gadget maker Brando (gotta love the name) is addressing the demand by building a heater right into one of its peripherals. Fareastgizmos says the temperature of this "USB warmer optical mouse" can be raised by 45 degrees. At $22, it probably doesn't have a temperature gauge, but it … Read more

It's raining Treos, hallelujah

Well, I suppose not everyone is screaming hallelujah, but for all you Treo fanatics, here's the latest scoop on some upcoming models. It appears that both the Treo 750 and the Treo 680 have been given the green light by the FCC, which means that these GSM smart phones could end up at a certain carrier's (ahem, Cingular's, cough, cough) doorstep very soon. Stay tuned...

Palm Treo cast in 'A Good Year'

The Palm Treo might really want to start thinking about getting a Hollywood agent. The smart phone, which this year made small-screen appearances on shows including How I Met Your Mother, CSI: Miami, The Nine and Boston Legal, has landed a starring role in A Good Year with Russell Crowe. Don't let all the red-carpet action go to your head, Treo.

The film, which opens Friday, is directed by Ridley Scott, the same guy behind the classic 1984 Super Bowl commercial that launched Apple's Macintosh computer.

In A Good Year, Crowe plays London-based investment expert Max Skinner, who … Read more

How palm veins can tell the future

The way things are going, the palm (lowercase) may be the key to our schoolchildren's future. Imagine, if you will, a system where kids ID themselves for such everyday tasks as buying lunch at the cafeteria. Then later, they could use this "contactless biometric palm vein authentication system" for access to classroom desktops and laptops.

Actually, Fujitsu's PalmSecure technology will probably be used first by adults, given the almost-daily news reports of huge security breaches because of lost or stolen laptops. And, as Plastic Bamboo points out, the system's touchless feature makes it germaphobe-friendly--no small … Read more

A different kind of palm reader at school

Cyberbullying may still be a problem, but at least your kids won't get their lunch money stolen if this technology has anything to do with it. Working with Fujitsu, a Scottish company called Yarg Biometrics is testing its PalmReader security device at a primary school in Glasgow, according to Gizmag. The technology reads palm vein patters to authenticate accounts for cashless catering, but that could be just a prelude to other security uses that some might find more Orwellian: Among the possibilities, Yarg says, the PalmReader could be used "to monitor truancy levels, to facilitate accurate attendance at … Read more
