Western Digital releases 1TB laptop hard drive

The storage-capacity gap between laptop and desktop hard drives just shrank significantly.

Western Digital announced Monday two laptop drives that offer "extreme" amounts of storage: the Scorpio Blue 1TB and the Scorpio Blue 750GB. Prior to this announcement, the largest laptop hard drive available was 500GB.

Currently, the largest desktop hard drive on the market is 2TB. The Scorpio Blue 1TB drive, though half the capacity, is still very impressive, considering the fact that a 2.5-inch laptop drive is much smaller than a 3.5-inch desktop drive. The new WD laptop drives are the first that use … Read more

LG display has identity crisis

The last monitor with an identity crisis I reviewed was the Samsung SyncMaster T240HD. I cleverly called it the "TV disguised as a monitor," or was it the "monitor disguised as a TV"? Hmmm, I don't remember and really, does it really matter? I think not.

This week I got in the LG Flatron M237WD. This is a Full HD 1920x1080 resolution 23-incher that also has an identity crisis. It acts as a monitor with its VGA and DVI connections, but it also includes some extras that makes one wonder about its true identity.

Western Digital's 2TB green drive eyes surveillance market

Western Digital has been busy customizing its hard drives.

A month ago, the company introduced what it called the first green 2TB enterprise hard drive aimed at data centers. Now it's making another drive specifically for audio and video applications, and also the surveillance market.

The company announced Tuesday the new 2TB WD AV-GP. It incorporates Western Digital's AV Intelligent Drive Technology, which makes it a good choice for AV applications such as DVRs, media centers, media servers, and surveillance video recording.

The drive is designed to better withstand high temperatures for long periods of time while remaining quiet during operation. The new drive's features also include:

Western Digital's WD TV gets a firmware update

If you are an owner of a WD TV (and I really believe you should be one if you already have an LCD or plasma TV), I have some good news.

Western Digital just released Friday an update for the device's firmware, to version 1.02.07. The main improvement is the addition of built-in codecs and better audio support for the MKV file. This is the file format that's popularly used to store compressed high-def content such as that of Blu-ray movies, much similar to the DivX format that's used to store compressed DVD movies.

Give your DVR a storage boost

Ever since I wrote about Apricorn's DVR Xpander, I've received many e-mails from readers asking about a similar unit for their TiVos. Today I have the answer.

Western Digital announced Wednesday its TiVo-verified My DVR Expander, which offers up to 1TB of storage capacity. The unit is designed to work with TiVo Series 3 and TiVo HD digital video recorders. Apart from TiVo, it has also been tested to work with Scientific Atlanta's Explorer 8300 series DVRs, which includes the 8300, 8300 HD, 8300 MR, and 8300 HD-MR models.

The new expander allows you to instantly and … Read more

Western Digital goes greener with new enterprise hard drive

Western Digital has been using its GreenPower technology in most of its consumer-grade hard drives, including those in the My Book World Edition NAS server and the My Book Mirror Edition external hard drive.

The company turned its hard drives' green levels up a notch on Monday with the new WD RE4-GP hard drive. The drive is designed to work best for data center and digital video production facilities.

According to Western Digital, these are the two applications where a big number of hard drives are used and therefore would show a significant improvement in energy savings.

My Book World Edition NAS server gets update

I reviewed Western Digital's new My Book World Edition NAS server (the white light version) a while ago and complained about its sluggish Web interface, which contains confusing information suggesting that you would need to download software to make the MioNet remote-access solution work. The remote-access solution itself seemed useless. … Read more

WD ShareSpace NAS server faster, offers 8TB

Six months after the initial release of the WD ShareSpace NAS server that offers up to 4TB of storage, Western Digital is now ready to double the storage space of the device.

The company announced Tuesday that its WD ShareSpace network storage server now offers up to 8TB of capacity, DLNA2 media-streaming capabilities, and more importantly, up to 30 percent faster transfer speed.

This is really good news if the new WD ShareSpace offers the same speed as the recently reviewed My Book World Edition; it would be a huge improvement from the predecessor.
