Inflatable 'Star Trek' Captain's Chair: Sit long and prosper

I always thought an original-style "Star Trek" captain's chair would be my personal holy grail of memorabilia. Unfortunately, a really great replica costs $1,000.

Now there's an option that will only cost me $25 and a bit of lung power. The "Star Trek" Inflatable Captain's Chair from ThinkGeek arrived along with a slew of April Fools' products like the "Star Wars" Admiral Akbar Singing Bass and Electronic Hungry Hungry Hippos for iPad.

The inflatable chair, however, is very real. Before you get too excited, though, let's look at the fine print.

The chair is only rated to hold up to 120 pounds. That makes it suitable for child Star Fleet recruits, slim adults, or Captain James T. Bark, your 6-pound chihuahua. William Shatner and the majority of Trekkies are out of luck.… Read more

Most millennials OK taking confidential files home

No one ever said that human beings should be consistent. No one ever said that they should even make sense.

Life is a struggle and the way bosses sometimes treat their workers can be beyond any pale--beyond even the moral code of Vlad the Impaler.

Who can be surprised, therefore, that harassed workers take home confidential files in order to complete their tasks? Indeed, a survey performed by Harris Interactive on behalf of a company called FileTrek shows that 90 percent of people believe that, um, other people take confidential files home with them.

I have managed to obtain an … Read more

Hilarious take on Star Wars vs. Star Trek

This is one way to settle the endless Star Wars vs. Star Trek arguments.

If you've never seen "The Graham Norton Show" on BBC, this is definitely one good way to get acquainted with it. With two major movie stars, Liam Neeson and Patrick Stewart, in one room, the outspoken comedian compares each actor's sci-fi action figure to see which franchise he likes best. I never thought I'd see a duel between Jedi Master Qui-Gon Quin and Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

I won't ruin the outcome, but if you think the Picard face-palm meme is hilarious, just wait until you see this. … Read more

Twitter yanks Reading Rainbow handle from squatter

A squatter using TV show Reading Rainbow's Twitter handle was ousted in just over two hours.

LeVar Burton--Reading Rainbow TV host and also the actor who played Star Trek's Lieutenant Geordi--set out yesterday to gain control of the Reading Rainbow Twitter handle.

Burton, who for 26 years hosted the now defunct PBS show that encouraged kids to read, launched a new company called RRKidz in September and is currently working on a Reading Rainbow iPad app.

However, when he tried to register the @readingrainbow Twitter handle--he learned it was already taken. According to TechCrunch, the handle owner … Read more

A Star Trek coffee table for 'Enterprising' couch potatoes

Woodworker Barry Shields' impressive Star Trek coffee table creation proves yet again that Trekkies are nothing if not, uh... Enterprising. Sorry.

Terrible puns aside, there's no need to apologize for this one-of-a-kind living room conversation piece. It took two attempts for Shields to get it just the way he wanted, with the glass cut in such a way to make the ship appear to be in motion.

You'll find it for sale on Etsy for $3,100--a real deal when you consider how many galaxies this genuine starship has visited and how deliciously geeky it would be to … Read more

Trekkie forced to sink Voyager-themed flat

We wish all Trekkie stories could be as happy as that of the DIY Enterprise gondola we recently spotted bobbing calmly atop a Southern California canal.

But life isn't always sunshine and purring Tribbles. And so it is that we bring you a Trekkie tale with a tragic twist.

Lifelong sci-fi fan Tony Alleyne, a former DJ and current interior design hopeful in the U.K., will probably be forced to dismantle the Hinckley, Leicestershire, Starship-themed flat he spent 10 years creating. Apparently, reports the Register, Alleyne's estranged wife Georgina has been paying the mortgage on the one-bedroom flat since the couple split and now wants to sell it "as conventional property."

We're assuming real estate agents don't generally apply that description to an apartment that's been reworked to look like a Starship Voyager flight deck complete with computer console, flashing lights, and "transporters." Then again, maybe Georgina should try listing the property at Comic-Con. … Read more

Eye-Fi calls shenanigans on the SD Association

SD cards now have a patent spat of their own.

During CES, Toshiba and the SD Association made a couple of announcements that flew under my radar: a new specification dubbed Wireless LAN SD, aka iSDIO, (PDF) and a formal announcement by Toshiba about its FlashAir card, the first to support iSDIO.

Friday morning, Eye-Fi issued a statement on its blog expressing its displeasure over the SDA's announcement. In its statement, Yuval Koren, CEO of Eye-Fi, claims the announcement was premature, issued before the draft consideration process was complete, and that it runs the risk of violating some of … Read more

Priceline to kill off Shatner--possibly during the Super Bowl

Time defeats us all. Surely, though, it is the height of bad taste for the Grim Reaper to come for you during the Super Bowl.

Yet that appears to be the fate awaiting William Shatner, as those nice people at Priceline send him plunging to his apparent death in their latest TV spot.

This is a time for the rending of garments. This is a time for weeping in the streets. This is not a time for a single Star Trek joke.

As the Associated Press sniffs it, the Shat--who has been manfully trying to send you off to places … Read more

'Star Trek' door chime sounds like the future

A good portion of my adolescence was devoted to re-creating "Star Trek" props from household items. I still have my Lego flip communicator.

Now I can save myself a lot of time, effort, and Legos by dropping $30 on ThinkGeek's Star Trek Electronic Door Chime.

A DIY "Star Trek" door can be done. This guy made one. If you don't have the patience for that kind of elaborate project, you can settle for the ThinkGeek door chime's swooshing sound effects instead.… Read more
