What does it take to make a great smartwatch? The Kreyos Meteor is an effort to at least outdo the Pebble. Based on features, I'm inclined to agree it does...but is that enough?
I got a chance to see and hold the Kreyos Meteor, a smartwatch that's seeking early-adopter funding on Indiegogo right now. The watch, which comes out this fall, works with iOS, Android, and even Windows Phone 8 devices -- or, if you wish, syncing via Mac or Windows. And, based on the site and the Kreyos Meteor's design, it's clearly aiming at … Read more
It's been quite a week for news that starts with the word "smart."
Eric Schmidt was caught last week holding the rumored Moto X smartphone, which opened the flood gates of speculation: When will it come out? Who will carry it? What're the specs?
A leaked alleged release schedule, though, claims to have an answer to at least one of those questions. The Moto X, along with the HTC One, will arrive at Verizon next month.
The smartwatch train is a fast-moving one, and everyone's trying to jump aboard. A new rumor claims that Microsoft is hard at work on a smartwatch of its own, and has put the Surface team on the case. And Apple, not to be outdone, is supposedly "aggressively" hiring people for its iWatch team. … Read more
Android users definitely get the better deal when it comes to the Pebble watch. The "openness" of Android allows for developers to piggyback on other services and products, such as Pebble and come up with some handy uses.
While browsing Google Play, scrolling through the long list of apps developers have made to integrate with Pebble, I found an app called Pebble Rocker.
This app is more like the Swiss Army knife of Pebble apps, as it adds a lot of different functions to the Pebble watch from one place. After buying the app for just under $1 … Read more
Wearable technology may get a big boost from smartwatches next year.
Smartwatch shipments are expected to explode to more than 5 million worldwide in 2014, research firm Canalys said in a forecast released Tuesday.
The research firm estimates that more than 330,000 smartwatches were shipped in 2012. This year, with the release of the Kickstarter-born Pebble Watch, Canalys expects smartwatch shipments to climb past 500,000.
Canalys predicts a new generation of devices from Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and others will spur the huge jump in smartwatch shipments.
"Smartwatches will be the most important new product category in … Read more
From Microsoft to Sony, it seems like everyone's starting to make smartwatches these days. It's an increasingly crowded field, but if you're into sports, here's one that might suit you.
WearIt, from Montana fitness electronics firm Heart Rate Watch Company, packs in GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 .b/g/n, ANT+, and Bluetooth Smart 4.0 LE connectivity, as well as USB 2.0.
It can connect to external sensors, such as heart rate monitors and bike speed sensors, displaying data on its 240x240-pixel resolution touchscreen. … Read more
Microsoft has decided that smartwatch production should fall under the auspices of the Surface team, The Verge reported on Monday, citing people who are familiar with Microsoft's plans. The Xbox accessories team previously was developing a prototype that would come with a heart rate monitor, The Verge claims.
The device runs on a modified version of Windows 8 that would allow for integration with other Windows devices, The Verge's sources say. An earlier report from AmongTech, which claims to have obtained its information from Microsoft sources, says that the wristwatch boasts 6GB of storage and connectivity with LTE … Read more
Forgetting to silence your phone when you should know better is something I think we can all sympathize with. It happens to all of us. If you have a Pebble watch and an Android device, changing the current sound profile from your wrist is possible.
In order to silence your phone from your watch you'll need to download and install a free app from the Play Store. The app, Pebble Phone Ringer Switcher, is small and requires no setup.
After installing the app on your Android device, launch it and tap on the "Install PBW to Watch" … Read more
If there is one thing Sony has learned in watching the rise of Samsung over the past decade, it's been the singular power that smartphone leadership affords.
In recognition of this, Sony acquired Ericsson's stake from its 10-year joint venture last year and created Sony Mobile. The evolution of the Sony-Ericsson mobile product line had reflected Sony's fortunes. Imbued with such winning subbrands as Walkman and CyberShot in the feature phone era, it had to start from scratch with a new brand -- Xperia -- in the converged smartphone era. And despite phones that have won praise … Read more
