Amazon's Kindle Fire HD joins 'Retina' ranks

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD will bump up against the iPad Retina in the very exclusive ultra-high-resolution tablet club.

That club is made up of pretty much one product right now: Apple's third-generation iPad Retina. Its 9.7-inch display boasts a 2,048-by-1,536 pixel density, which yields 264 pixels per inch (PPI).

Amazon's just-announced 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD almost matches that, with a 1,920x1,200 resolution, giving it a PPI of 254.

Apple describes a Retina display as a pixel density that "is so high your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels." … Read more

Twitter said to be tossing 'Twitter for Mac' app

The rumor mill is heated up with chatter that Twitter is throwing the Twitter for Mac app under the bus. Apparently the social network is planning to stop all development and future updates on the app, according to TechCrunch.

Tech reporter MG Siegler announced earlier today, via Twitter no less, that, "Word is that Twitter made the call today: Twitter for Mac is done. They won't kill it outright, but no further updates. Goodbye, old friend."

There actually hasn't been much done to the app for some time now -- the last update was in June … Read more

Adobe Photoshop Touch iPad app now supports Retina Display

Owners of the latest iPad who use Photoshop Touch can now view their images in all their Retina Display glory.

Version 1.3 of Photoshop Touch for the iPad now handles the higher resolution found on Apple's third-generation tablet. The new support will not only enhance images but also render the interface, text, and other areas more "crisp and clean," according to Adobe.

Photoshop Touch users can also now work with images of print quality, up to 12 megapixels with several layers included. The default resolution is 4.2 megapixels with 10 layers, but users of the … Read more

The Retina Display laptop has teased consumers with a variety of wait times since its debut in June.

Apple initially promised a delay of two to three weeks following the launch of the new MacBook Pro. That quickly rose … Read more

Retina Display support coming to Adobe CS6 software

Adobe Systems' Creative Suite 6 will soon tap into the higher resolution of Retina Display on the MacBook Pro.

Adobe said yesterday that the CS6 versions of Photoshop and Lightroom will receive free updates in the coming months to support the Retina Display. Other CS6 products slated for the update include Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, Edge Animate, SpeedGrade, and Prelude.

Also on the list is the mobile app Photoshop Touch, which is designed for the iPad.

Apparently out of the running for the Retina Display update are such CS6 products as Flash, InDesign, and Fireworks. The budget-conscious Photoshop Elements … Read more

13-inch Retina MacBook Pro displays in production

Production is under way for a Retina display targeted at a more mainstream MacBook Pro, CNET has learned.

Production has begun of a 2,560-by-1,600 pixel density display that will land on a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro, NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim told CNET.

"The supply chain indications are that it's for a MacBook Pro 13.3 -- not a MacBook Air," said Shim.

Displays are being made by Samsung, LGD, and Sharp, he said.

Shim said that production volume is expected to be substantially higher out of the gate compared to the current 15.4-inch … Read more

Some Retina MacBook Pro owners seeing interface lag

Some owners of Apple's new Retina MacBook Pro are finding that instead of a smooth interaction with the OS X interface, the systems display relatively choppy behavior and may be slow to respond with moving windows, scrolling, and using Expose among other similar tasks. This problem seems to happen primarily when using Safari, Mail, and Mission Control features, but it also occurs in other programs.

Since the debut of the Retina MacBook Pro there has been some discussion over whether the system's hardware is capable of handling the computational throughput required by the Retina Display. In a recent … Read more

OWC releases first Retina SSD upgrade

Mac-centric peripheral and upgrade supplier Other World Computing has released new solid-state drive upgrade options for Apple's latest MacBook models. These upgrades allow you more flexibility in the configuration options for your MacBook system over the CTO options that Apple has supplied through its online store, especially for early adopters of the systems.

Apple's latest MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina Display systems have all been crammed with more features in smaller chassis designs, which has resulted in Apple shying away from industry-standard form factors for components to more proprietary designs that it can morph around the … Read more

New artificial retina helps blind mice see

A cure for blindness could be brewing at a Cornell University laboratory.

Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York say they've successfully decoded the brain signals that allow mice to see. Using this information with a new type of prosthetic retina, they were able to restore vision in mice.

Next up, the researchers say they've cracked the code of a monkey retina, which is nearly identical to that of a human. If the prosthesis works on monkeys too, the researchers think they may eventually be able to help people who've lost their eyesight.… Read more

Beware the allure of Apple's Retina Displays

Apple's Retina Displays are drop-dead gorgeous. But be careful what you wish for.

Like many, I got the third-generation iPad because of the 2,048-by-1,536-pixel-density Retina Display. And, like many, I didn't see a huge difference at first.

That was then. Now it's painful to pick up my Dell laptop with its 1,366x768-pixel 13.3-inch display and Windows 7 fonts (note: font-smoothing utilities go just so far).

And while my 11.6-inch MacBook Air fares better than the Dell (it packs the same number of pixels but into a smaller area giving it a higher PPIRead more
