That's one of the details from "Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple's Greatest Products," a new unauthorized biography about Apple's designer in chief that hit stores today. It's chock-full of tidbits about the designer, but many of the interesting insights revolve around the details and personality of Apple's notoriously secretive industrial design group.
Nokia likes its smartphones shaken, not stirred.
The company is working on two new handsets that will run Windows Phone 8.1 Blue, according to a new leak on mobile-leaking Twitter account @evleaks. Although neither device has an official name yet, they're currently code-named Goldfinger and Moneypenny -- references to the James Bond franchise -- according to @evleaks.
Actual details on Goldfinger and Moneypenny weren't shared by @evleaks, so it's important to take the report with a grain of salt. However, @evleaks has been quite successful at obtaining leaked information, which could lend some credence to the … Read more
I lived in New York City during the late 1990s and early Aughts, which is to say I lived in New York City at a time that predated the iPhone. I returned to New York last week and could not believe how different the city felt as the majority of pedestrians were walking around staring at or tapping on their phones. Eye contact was never something found in abundance in New York, but last week I felt as though I were surrounded by the (briskly) walking dead while ambling about the city, except instead of coming after my brains, these … Read more

The reason behind iOS 7 defaulting to minute increments for calendar appointments is beyond me. Have you ever scheduled a meeting for 8:03? I know I haven't.
In previous versions of iOS, the calendar would increment by 5 minutes, which makes a lot more sense. As it turns out, iOS 7 offers the same functionality, you just need to change a simple -- but hidden -- setting.
As WonderHowTo pointed out, a quick double-tap on the minute column when adding an appointment will change it from 1 to 5 minutes.
Sadly, the change doesn't remain in place; … Read more
European air travelers may soon be able to use their mobile gadgets during a whole flight.
On Wednesday, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said it will publish guidance this month that will allow the use of smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and MP3 players from takeoff to landing as long as they're in flight mode or airplane mode. Current EASA guidelines prohibit the use of such devices during taxiing, takeoff, and landing.
The new recommendations will apply to planes operated by European airlines. As a next step, EASA is investigating ways to allow mobile phone users to make phone calls … Read more
A new iPad Mini tracker has been launched by a surprising source.
SeaTurtle.org, which devotes most of its pages to the protection of sea turtles, can now tell you where to find one of the new iPad Minis. The site's iDevice Availability Notifier displays a grid of Apple stores listed alphabetically by state. The grid reveals which model Minis are available in which stores.
The page shows all of the Retina iPad Mini models from all carriers and in all capacities. A green cell means the tablet was in stock as of the last check, while a red … Read more

Otterbox is by far the dominant force in iPhone cases, according to a new study, but Apple is starting to make inroads.
Otterbox, which makes a wide array of cases for mobile products, owns more than 50 percent of the iPhone 4S case market, according to new data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). And while the company is still holding the biggest share for individual firms in the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S market, Apple's cases are likely an increasingly worrisome presence for the case-maker.
According to CIRP, Apple's iPhone 5C cases account for nearly 10 percent … Read more
In any other company's smartphone lineup, the $230 unlocked Black Pearl would be the budget option. For San Diego-based manufacturer Verykool, it's the premium model.
At its price, the Black Pearl is a great value for what you get. It has a crisp screen, fast processor, dual-SIM capability, and a few software extras that make it more than just another budget Android handset.
The Black Pearl beats the Verykool Vortex in every way. Though it's the company's most expensive model, at $280, and has a water-resistant, rugged exterior, the Vortex is plagued by an out-of-date operating … Read more
