Evernote gets built-in, third-party app directory

SAN FRANCISCO--Web-based memory service Evernote on Wednesday unveiled what it's calling the next phase of its business with something called "The Trunk."

The Trunk is both a directory of third-party sites and a set of tools that can be integrated into the Evernote service to bring additional functionality. According to Evernote CEO Phil Libin, who held a press conference about the new offering here, The Trunk is not an app store, per se, but it will let other companies more easily bring features to the product that Evernote itself could not.

Libin said more than 2,000 … Read more

Microsoft launches 'Spindex' social aggregator

SAN FRANCISCO--With a new tool called Spindex, Microsoft's Future Social Experiences Labs division is diving into a niche where many have failed: social-media aggregation.

Lili Cheng, general manager of Microsoft's FUSE labs, unveiled the tool onstage here at the Web 2.0 Expo on Tuesday afternoon, saying, "we kind of call it the impossible project."

Spindex will launch with an array of data that isn't typically found in a social-network feed dashboards like Seesmic or TweetDeck--a genre of app that has been thrown into limbo in the wake of Twitter's decision to launch official mobile and eventually desktop clients. … Read more

Evernote doubles note size limits, adds versioning

Evernote has pushed out a useful update to its premium service that adds a few more reasons to spend the $5 a month (or $45 a year) fee. Premium users now get double the storage on the size of notes, which has jumped from 25MB to 50MB a pop.

More impressive though is that the service is finally getting versioning control. Versioning is something that's especially important in word processing. If you're working on a particularly large piece of work, you might very well cut out portions here and there that you wish to bring back later on. … Read more

Scanner Pro turns an iPhone into a document scanner

Problem: You've just been handed a stack of papers that need to be signed and returned--and there's no fax machine in sight.

Problem: You've got a pocketful of receipts you're tired of carrying around--and no place to file them.

Problem: You need to convert a printed document into a PDF.

The solution for all these predicaments is Scanner Pro ($4.99), which turns your iPhone into a mobile scanner that connects to everything from Dropbox to Evernote to MobileMe.

Here's how it works: Find the most well-lit setting you possibly can, run the app, then … Read more

New Evernote beta brings face-lift, drawing tools

Evernote is giving its Windows desktop application a huge face-lift on Thursday. The new version of the writing and archiving tool has more in common with its Mac counterpart, borrowing features like thumbnail previews and a three-pane view that lets users quickly hop through notes they have saved in one of their Evernote notebooks.

The change may be jarring for some longtime Evernote users who have only used the Windows version, but for people like me, who use clients on both platforms--on a daily basis, the unification is welcome.

There are some peculiarities though. At first glance the already anemic … Read more

ReQall gets useful link to Evernote

The clever memory jogger service and voice-recognizing mobile software app ReQall is getting a link to my favorite note-taking app, Evernote.

The new iPhone version of ReQall puts a "related items" option on all entries. That option will link you to other ReQall entries as well as Evernote items that match up.

Items are linked by text. If you have a ReQall item that says, "Buy present for Joan," the related items you get will be those that have "Joan" in them or the word "present." And since Evernote recognizes text in … Read more

Third Party Application: Evernote

One of my favorite desktop applications is Evernote. It's a handy tool for clipping websites or partial web pages, making lists, keeping notes, and storing images which Evernote makes searchable. Evernote for Palm Pre was one of the first applications I downloaded from the App Catalog.

My experience so far has been disappointing. This isn't even version 1.0, however; it is version is 0.1.10, so I'll give them some slack for the lack of features. The main head-scratcher is the lack of zoom. Half of my notes in Evernote are images, either scans or … Read more

Evernote gets a whiff of wikis

Evernote, a great note-taking and productivity app and a 2009 Webware 100 editor's choice winner, is getting just a hint of multi-user capability. It has new, basic sharing features that tease at a new direction for the app/online service.

Evernote users can now share collections of pages or photos ("notebooks") with other people from the Evernote Web app. Notebooks can be shared with individuals or, as they could be before, published to their own URLs and shared with everybody on the Web.

For users of the free Evernote product, that's pretty much it. Premium (paid) … Read more

Webware 100 Editors' Choice: Evernote and Windows Live Sync (Rafe's favorites)

Sites: Evernote and Windows Live Sync Category: Editors' Choice, Rafe's favorites

These products are Webware editor's Rafe Needleman's somewhat secret productivity tools. Neither are well-known products, but both enable a person who does a lot of writing on more than one computer to stay productive.

Evernote is a note-taking application that has both downloadable software and a Web app. No matter which machine--PC, Mac, or iPhone--you use to take notes, you can see them almost immediately on any other of your machines that have the software. You can also get your notes on the Evernote Web service. … Read more

Note-taker's express

Evernote for BlackBerry lets you upload a text note, voice clip, picture, or file to your cloud-based Evernote account through its attractive, signature green interface. Simply scroll with the track ball to move through the four notetaking icons on the start screen, or pop down to the bottom to search a note by its tag. Pressing the Menu key reveals options to view recently-created notes, notes pending uploading, and an option to activate GPS.

The application's performance depends heavily on how strong the data connection is. On a weak data or Wi-Fi network, loading your history of notes could … Read more
