Netflix makes its way to the Sony Entertainment Network

Sony Entertainment Network has expanded with Netflix access, the companies announced today.

Starting today, those who own any of Sony's 2012 Bravia Blu-ray or Blu-ray home theater products that come with Sony Entertainment Network support will find Netflix's app available. Upon logging in to the service, Netflix subscribers will be able to stream any of Netflix's television shows or films.

Sony Entertainment Network allows users on a host of the company's products to access music and video. The offering, which is available on Bravia televisions, the PlayStation 3, and other products, already includes support for YouTube … Read more

Netflix Q1 solid, competitive worries emerge

Netflix reported a first-quarter loss, but delivered financials that were better than expected. The company's subscriber tally has stabilized and Netflix projected "a much earlier return to global profitability."

The catch? Netflix spent a lot of time in its investor letter talking about competition from Hulu, Amazon Prime, and TV Everywhere efforts from the likes of Comcast. Shares fell 15 percent in afterhours trading. It didn't help that Netflix's marketing and content costs continue to creep higher.

The streaming media giant reported a loss of $5 million, or 8 cents a share, on revenue of $… Read more

'Titanic' 3D: Surprisingly decent

Last night I saw "Titanic" in 3D at the IMAX and, surprisingly, the 3D is actually pretty good.

Why is that surprising? Because "Titanic" wasn't filmed using 3D cameras. Back in 1997 we were perfectly content to watch Leo and Kate legging it around the sinking ship in the usual two dimensions.

Filming a 3D movie using proper 3D cameras means the depth of the extra dimension in every scene is exactly as it should be. If you embark upon a 2D-to-3D conversion, however, you'll need to use software that makes a guess at exactly how deep each object on screen should appear to be.

Coffee table doubles as functional NES controller

The world needs more luxurious gaming furniture and less of those gaudy leather gamer chairs with built-in speakers.

Gaming decor goes to the next level with this coffee table that actually works as a fully functional Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) controller. Talented woodworker Charles Lushear sells the massive controller table on Etsy for $3,500 (plus shipping). The exotic item's 42 inches long, 18.25 inches wide, and 18 inches high, and you might want to seek permission from your significant other before purchasing it. … Read more

Sony Entertainment Network: 2012 smart TV hands-on

From phones to cameras to TVs game consoles, if you've played with a Sony device over the past 5 years, then you'll be quite familiar with the company's Xross Media Bar (XMB), which also forms the backbone of of its 2012 TV interface. This year Sony is also pushing its Entertainment Network even harder, which for some reason meant adding a new, completely different-looking interface on top of the old one and keeping both.

Content Sony's 2012 app selection, as seen on the HX750 series I recently tested, is basically the same as last year (Sony recently added Amazon Instant Video to its PS3 console but the service already existed on Bravia TVs). High-profile apps include Netflix, Hulu Plus, Cinema Now for video, Pandora and Slacker for audio, and Skype (optional camera/speakerphone required), Facebook and Twitter for networking. The Sony remotes also carry a dedicated Netflix button for easy access to the video service.

The only major missing video services are Vudu and MLB TV, while subscription music services are conspicuously absent, probably so they don't compete with Music Unlimited.… Read more

Netflix, Hulu drive U.S. consumers to cut cable cord

Cutting the cord in hopes of saving money on television programming is often contemplated. But last year, relatively few cable or satellite subscribers in the U.S. actually did it, a new study shows.

The Convergence Consulting Group yesterday released its research on TV cord cutting to see how many people left their cable or satellite plans behind to access all their content over the Web. The firm found that 1.05 million people in the U.S. cut their TV subscriptions last year. Since 2008, 2.65 million people have decided against cable or satellite and gone to alternative … Read more

April Fools' Day makes for Internet silliness

Fakery on the Internet? You've got to be kidding.

No, no; it's true. Especially on April Fools' Day, when the World Wide Web and mischievous geeks all over the planet celebrate leg-pulls and pushovers.

This year, Google kicked things off a day early with a supposed port of Google Maps to Nintendo's 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. What follows is a rundown of other 2012 Fools' Day shenanigans, in case you foolishly missed them. (We've tossed in a few related stories for good measure too.)

We'll be updating the list as April Fools' Day rolls along.… Read more

MAD for the iPad

Despite Apple's ostensibly strict rules that prevent inappropriate content from its App Store, DC Entertainment, publisher of such upstanding heroes as Superman and Wonder Woman, is about to sneak through its first dedicated MAD Magazine app.

Not available until Sunday, which is known to watercooler comedians as both April Fools' Day and the birthday of MAD mascot Alfred E. Neuman, the MAD app might surprise you: it's not a waste of time.

Guarantees against it insulting your intelligence, however, have yet to be made.

The app itself will be free and offer some free content, although full issues … Read more

Spotify extends free-play 'honeymoon' indefinitely

Spotify users who have taken advantage of the company's no-cost, no-limits listening won't be held to any new limits just yet.

The music-streaming company announced today that it will extend its "honeymoon for unlimited free listening" for an indefinite period of time. When Spotify launched last year, the company said that users would be able to listen to free, ad-supported music for six months. After that, they would have been subject to a 10-hour monthly listening cap.

Spotify's decision to extend the unlimited listening isn't necessarily a surprise, since the company has been doing … Read more

Amazon selling PS3 on the cheap

We noticed Amazon's video games deal of the day features a 320GB Sony PlayStation 3 for a great price.

The 320GB slim PS3 usually costs around $299 (not including tax), but Amazon's deal cuts the price $40 to $259 with free shipping.

While this promotion may not hold up against a Black Friday special, we think you will agree the price seems nice for the HD game-playing Blu-ray player with mega hard drive.

Amazon's deal sure beats the $399 I paid for a 40GB PS3 back in 2008. … Read more
