New iPad lights up trade-in services

Record numbers of iPad owners sold their devices yesterday following Apple's introduction of its next-generation model.

Today both eBay and Gazelle, online services that buy used tablets and other gadgets, reported a record influx of people selling their tablets, many of which were models less than a year old.

eBay says it had "more than" 20,000 trade-in offers for tablets yesterday, 89 percent of which were iPads. eBay says that 20,000 number represents a 10-fold increase in the volume of trade-ins the company pulled in the day before Apple's event. Perhaps more telling is … Read more

Apple again tops Fortune's list of most admired companies

Apple is once again tops in the eyes of the business world, according to Fortune.

The iPhone maker took the lead as the world's most admired company for the fifth year in a row.

Selected No. 1 by business professionals polled for Fortune's annual list, Apple was cited for its banner year. CEO Tim Cook was able to steer the company after the resignation and death of Steve Jobs to end 2012 with a prosperous fourth quarter thanks to heavy demand for the iPhone 4s.

eBay's iPad trade-ins up tenfold from same time last year

With the anticipation of a new iPad being just around the corner, more people have been trading in their first- and second-generation Apple tablets, eBay says.

This afternoon, the company said it's generated more than 125,000 tablet trade-in offers this month, with 97.6 percent of those consisting of Apple iPad models. That number is up tenfold from the number of offers during the same month last year, eBay said.

BARCELONA, Spain--Wireless operators need to stop locking devices and offering overly complicated data plans. That's the message from Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn and eBay CEO John Donahoe here at Mobile World Congress.

Dunn and Donahoe took the stage today as part of a panel discussion about mobile payments. While the CEOs talked a lot about how shopping and payments are changing thanks to mobile devices, they also took a few jabs at wireless operators, challenging them to become more open to help spur greater adoption of their services across a broad range of devices.

President Obama's Chrysler on eBay for $1 million

Want a piece of U.S. presidential history?

Well, a cool $1 million will get you this 2005 Chrysler 300C, once owned by President Barack Obama. The vehicle has been put up for auction by an anonymous owner, who has chosen to sell it through a respected eBay broker, referred to in the eBay description merely as "Lisa."

The 5.7-liter V8-powered luxury sedan was owned by the president when he was a senator. The 300C only has 20,800 miles on its odometer.

eBay earnings soar after strong holiday quarter

Following strong results this past holiday season from online (and offline) retailers, eBay was expected to deliver strong earnings for the fourth quarter of 2011--and it did.

eBay reported a fourth quarter net income of $2.0 billion, or $1.51 a share (statement). Non-GAAP earnings were 60 cents a share on a revenue of $3.38 billion and a non-GAAP net income of $788.6 million.

Wall Street was expecting eBay to report fourth quarter earnings of 54 cents a share on revenue of $3.32 billion.

Apple, Amazon tops among those holiday-shopping via handhelds

Apple and Amazon took home the best grades in customer satisfaction among people who did their holiday shopping via a mobile device.

ForeSee Results' "E-Retail Satisfaction Index" looked at the top 16 retail sites out of a possible 40 to gauge which offered the best mobile experience for holiday buyers. Apple's score of 85 out of 100 and Amazon's score of 84 handily surpassed third-place Dell with only 78.

Foresee Usability Team Lead Matthew Dull said both companies place huge value on the customer experience and carry that into their mobile environments.
