Action figures immortalized in artsy lamps

Take a look at this eccentric array of action figure lamps by U.K. firm Evil Robot Designs. They feature painted pint-size superstars from geeky films, video games, and comic books.

Each of the six lamps in the collection has an ear-catching name like Alien Nation and Forbidden Planet. It would take paragraphs to list all the characters integrated into the 2-foot fixtures, but some notables (not mentioned in the photo captions) include Mysterio; Green Goblin; evil xenomorphs from the "Alien" movie series; He-Man; Bunnygirl "Suzumiya Haruhi"; and many more. … Read more

Low Latency No. 27: The finer things in life

We think the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display is an awesome machine. Our only gripe is that we'd have to make 4,150 Low Latency cartoons before we could afford one. It's a lot of money to ask for a laptop, which is why we wish Apple offered it without the expensive retina screen.

Having such a high-resolution and dense pixel display makes sense on the new iPad, but that's also because we stare at it a lot more closely than we do a laptop. We've seen the new MacBook side by side with last year's model, and it's really tough to tell the difference.… Read more

Low Latency No. 26: Blood brothers

If there's one thing a lot of E3 2012 games have in common, it's guns. It's become such a universal trend that games that don't feature some sort of regenerative health, cover system, ammo looting, or exploding barrel seem out of place. So where does a company like Nintendo fall in? Sure, they've been making a lot of games with the same characters for decades, but do they need to follow suit as well?… Read more

Green Lantern relaunched as gay -- three moms outraged

Earth 2 issue 2 preview

Once upon a time, male superheroes only kissed girls. If they kissed anyone at all.

However, now that it can be publicly declared that boys kiss boys and lead vast companies and girls kiss girls and become mayor of Houston, superheroes are coming out of the phone booth too.

Indeed, today it was announced by DC Comics that the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, is re-emerging as a gay man.

As USA Today reports it, he will be in the second issue of DC's Earth 2 series and be the main superhero.

Indeed, he … Read more

Low Latency No. 25: Finders keepers

This week's comic is inspired solely by a tweet from our very own CNET TV editor Ty Pendlebury. After at least two documented cases of iPhone prototypes getting lost in bars, you'd think Apple employees would have learned their lesson by now.

Will Apple unveil an HDTV at WWDC? That remains to be seen; we're just hoping one doesn't show up left behind in some bar in Southern California.… Read more

Marvel creates superhero for boy with hearing aid

I defy you not to be moved by this.

Yes, you might be a nerd who is only moved by machines and impossible superheroes.

But here is a small hero, 4-year-old Anthony Smith from Salem, N.H. Anthony wears a hearing aid. He was born with several chromosomal abnormalities. He doesn't have a right ear. He can only hear a little from his left, so he wears a hearing aid.

He calls the hearing aid Blue Ear. But he got fed up wearing it. Why? Because superheroes don't wear hearing aids. They might have been blind, like Daredevil, … Read more

The 404 1,060: Where we break through the clusterzuck (podcast)

Now that the Internet isn't flooded with Facebook IPO news, we can move on to more breaking news, like Hollywood finally answering our prayers for a Hook prequel that tells the Rufio origin story.

That's right, the original actor who played Rufio, Dante Basco, recently announced in an interview that a Rufio prequel film is in the works under the directing eye of Rpin Suwannath. Maybe we'll finally get to the bottom of how he got those fabulous red tights.… Read more

Low Latency No. 24: Buyer's remorse

We're no economists here at Low Latency (and quite frankly we don't really understand the stock market), but if we could afford to invest in Facebook we'd certainly be upset about its 18-percent drop on day one. It's been falling steadily for a few days and the talk of Facebook's valuation being totally out of whack is now commonplace.

How ironic is it that a site that lets people mislead others about who they really are has its own identity crisis on Wall Street? … Read more

The 404 1,058: Where CNET fans for the win (podcast)

Congratulations to all of our colleagues at CNET TV for winning a Webby Award in People's Voice Award in the Technology category at last night's ceremony.

Plenty of celebrities including Bono, George Lucas, Al Gore, Buzz Aldrin, and more were on hand to pay tribute to Steve Jobs and celebrate the best of the Web. None of CNET's programming would be useful without viewers to watch it, so thanks to you for tuning in!… Read more

Low Latency No. 23: Brace yourself

The inspiration for this week's comic comes from an Internet meme classic, and the fact that HBO's "Game of Thrones" is the most pirated show of 2012.

So while we make fun of the situation, there's something serious to be said about why this is happening. "Game of Thrones" is fantastic, but if you don't have cable, you're not watching it -- legally. We've been talking about it for months on The 404 and we seem to agree that HBO needs to offer some way for nonsubscribers to pay to watch certain shows a la carte. Having the most pirated show isn't a title anyone wants, so why not cash in and make paying for "Game of Thrones" easier than illegally downloading it? … Read more
