The 404 986: Where it's hard to stop midstream (podcast)

There are no chat room viewers to keep us on topic now that we've stopped live streaming.

So fair warning: we spend most of the first half explaining the concept of Goodwill stores to Jeff, whose ignorance I still suspect is a veiled attempt at live trolling.… Read more

Super Bowl XLVI launches free app for game day

The NFL is gearing up for tens of thousands of visitors to descend upon Indianapolis to watch the Super Bowl live this weekend. In order to help fans navigate the city and stadium, the sports federation released a free app yesterday for iOS and Android called Super Bowl XLVI Guide.

The app's features include a detailed guide to local restaurants, nightlife, and official Super Bowl events, a 3D map of Indianapolis, and an interactive 3D map of Lucas Oil Stadium, along with screens to follow different social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. The idea is to put every … Read more

Feds seize illegal sports-streaming sites

Just a few days short of Super Bowl Sunday, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced today it had seized 307 Web sites that either live-streamed sports or sold fake NFL paraphernalia.

The federal agents also arrested a Michigan man on criminal copyright infringement charges who allegedly operated nine of the streaming sites.

"While most people are focusing on whether the Patriots or Giants will win on Sunday, we at ICE have our sights on a different type of victory: defeating the international counterfeiting rings that illegally profit off of this event, the NFL, its players and sports … Read more

Automakers spoof movies in Super Bowl ads, and employ many dogs

You won't have to wait until Sunday to enjoy the latest crop of Super Bowl commercials. And from the looks of it there will be a bumper crop of automaker ads.

Wedged between the notoriously racy GoDaddy ad and various commercials for beverages and yogurt, will be more vehicle ads than ever.

Last week, Audi took a stab at trendy creatures of the night. This week Jerry Seinfeld revives his old shtick--complete with Soup Nazi and other characters--for an ad for the new Acura NSX. Jay Leno and other familiar faces appear in the extended version of the ad.… Read more

Best Buy lines up smartphone deal for Super Bowl

Best Buy hopes the Super Bowl will bring super-sized crowds of smartphone buyers to its stores.

The retailer plans to run its second-ever Super Bowl spot, this year placing the spotlight solely on mobile and creating a short-term deal that will dole out $50 gift cards to customers who buy smartphones this year.

The push is part of Best Buy's increased focus on mobile, which remains one of the stronger revenue drivers for the retail chain. While the company is seeing slowing sales and price cuts in other areas, smartphones are lucrative.

Most consumers still tend to go to … Read more

VW tries to out-Vader its last Super Bowl ad

As Bruce Willis can attest, sequels are never easy. Often, they come on the back of unexpected success. The creators are unprepared.

Sympathy is, therefore, deserving to those at VW who had to follow up last year's Super Bowl ad in which a little boy dressed like Darth Vader wanted to force everyday objects to accede to his will.

However, this year's VW follow-up might disappoint some. Here we have a dog trying to lose weight so he can chase a shiny red VW Beetle. Yes, VW already offered a teaser featuring dogs barking the Star Wars Imperial … Read more

Will Will Arnett eat Alec Baldwin in Hulu Super Bowl spot?

You might remember that, three years ago, Alec Baldwin rather graced the Super Bowl in an ad for Hulu.

In those heady times before he became subsumed into the alien world of Words With Friends, Baldwin offered that everyone in TV was, in fact, an alien. (I have embedded the evidence below.)

For this year's Super Bowl, it seems that concept is making a comeback, except this time with Will Arnett. Here we see him in front of the same large white doors that separate us from TV world.

Finally, he enters. But what is this all about? Should … Read more

Samsung's Super Bowl ad: Farrelly brother, Apple-baiting?

Might there be some brand new Samsung product hanging from Cameron Diaz's hair during the Super Bowl?

I ask this apparently spurious question because Samsung's Twitter feed has been glistening with tease about its forthcoming Super Bowl spot.

First the company tweeted: "We're telling fans first: Next Sunday we launch a device so revolutionary only an ad in America's biggest game can do it justice."

A mere hour later, its more than 333,000 faithful were stroked and stoked with: "To make our first ever SB ad as noteworthy as the #GalaxyNote itself, … Read more
