Windows Phone update to bring more than 500 new features

Microsoft already previewed some of the new business capabilities coming to Windows Phone via its impending Mango update, but it looks like that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Speaking at the Japanese Microsoft Developer Forum 2011, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed that the company has added more than 500 new features to its mobile operating system, which are set to be unveiled at a special preview event in New York on Tuesday.

Ballmer also noted that the company will share information on who will build new Windows Phones, indicating that we might hear about some new hardware at … Read more

Bill Gates giddy over Skype acquisition

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates couldn't be more pleased to see his company acquire Skype.

"I think it's a great, great deal for Skype," he told the BBC in an interview published yesterday. "I think it's a great deal for Microsoft."

Microsoft announced its intentions to acquire Skype last week in a deal valued at $8.5 billion. If and when the deal closes later this year, the VoIP provider will become the Microsoft Skype Division under the leadership of its current CEO, Tony Bates.

Gates, who said he used his influence as chairman … Read more

Microsoft boosts cash compensation for employees

Microsoft took another step toward middle age, shifting a significant piece of its employee compensation from stock to cash, implicitly acknowledging that its stock performance isn't enough to retain top talent.

CEO Steve Ballmer sent an e-mail to the company's 90,000 employees this morning, outlining a new compensation and review process. The company is significantly scaling back its stock awards for employees, replacing that with cash. And it's revising the complex review system in an effort to create a much clearer link between performance, rating, and compensation.

"Our ability to deliver great value to our billions of customers is driven by the ideas and passions of our employees," Ballmer wrote. "Through our history, we have been THE place people came when they wanted to make a difference in the world through software, hardware and services."

The changes seem to recognize the lure of younger tech companies that draw the kinds of employees Microsoft once did. While Microsoft remains a top spot for college grads, recruiting tables for Google and, more recently, Facebook often draw larger crowds.

Through the late 1990s, Microsoft was minting millionaires with its stock-option program. But as Microsoft has matured, compensation has been a core gripe for employees. The legend of the "Microsoft millionaire" is the stuff of corporate history books these days. Microsoft's shares have traded sideways for most of the last decade. Employees have been working for a paycheck and little else.… Read more

Microsoft reportedly at odds over retail store push

Microsoft has reportedly been at odds internally over how aggressively it should expand its retail stores.

Citing sources close to the company, Business Insider reported this week that CEO Steve Ballmer and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner have both been pushing for more Microsoft retail stores in a drive to match or even exceed the 300 Apple stores doing business around the world.

But others in the company have apparently been crunching the numbers to argue against such a rapid expansion. To match the appeal of the Apple stores, Microsoft's stores have proven expensive to build. Plus, most of … Read more

Microsoft CEO: Mobile is all about the platform

BARCELONA--The battle for the mobile consumer is no longer about who has the coolest device, but rather who has the most compelling ecosystem. That's the message from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who took the stage to kick off this year's Mobile World Congress.

A year ago, Ballmer was here to launch the company's revamped mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7. This year, devices with the OS have been on the market for four months, and the company has about 8,000 apps in its market. Microsoft also just announced a partnership with the world's largest phone … Read more

Microsoft prepping Kinect drivers, SDK for Windows?

Microsoft is reportedly putting together drivers and a software development kit that would allow its Kinect motion sensor to work with Windows, according to WinRumors.

Citing the usual sources familiar with the situation, WinRumors says the drivers and SDK would give third-party developers the ability to create software titles that can use a Kinect plugged directly into a Windows PC.

Since its official launch last November, the Kinect has proven fertile ground for developers and hackers eager to stretch it beyond its Xbox 360 roots. People clever enough to write their own drivers have already been tinkering with the product, … Read more

Ballmer: Kinect support headed to PCs, in time

What do you do with a gadget that's sold 8 million units in 60 days? You make it work on a platform that's larger than the 50 million install base it's built to work with. That would be the reasoning behind bringing Kinect to PCs, which Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer did his best not to deny when talking to the BBC on top of the software giant's CES booth.

When asked by the BBC's Spencer Kelly whether Microsoft plans to let users plug a Kinect unit into a PC in the near future, Ballmer responded … Read more

CES: Netflix, Hulu Plus navigation comes to Kinect

Xbox 360 and Kinect owners will soon be able to enjoy easy new ways to wave their way through movies and music.

Microsoft this evening announced a spring software upgrade that will let Kinect owners use hand gestures and spoken commands to watch videos streamed through Netflix and the Hulu Plus monthly subscription service, effectively upping the stakes in the rivalry with Sony's Blu-ray-equipped PlayStation 3.

You'll be able to watch these "controller-free in the living room, the biggest screen in your home," Ron Forbes of Microsoft's interactive entertainment division told the audience at the … Read more

Microsoft CEO Ballmer to sell off 75 million shares

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer plans to sell up to 75 million Microsoft shares to help "gain financial diversification" and to "assist in tax planning before the end of the year," the company announced today.

Before taking into account recent sales, Ballmer held 408 million shares, the company said, citing the latest Microsoft proxy report.

"Even though this is a personal financial matter, I want to be clear about this to avoid any confusion," Ballmer said. "I am excited about our new products and the potential for our technology to change people's lives, … Read more
