The 404 Podcast 488: Where we now offer free Wi-Fi--with the purchase of a Happy Meal

This may be the last week of live 404 episodes for 2009, and it's also been the most hectic. With Wilson missing his second day in a row and Caroline McCarthy being bedridden by a holiday cold, Mark Licea and Bonnie Cha help me hold down the fort.

Today's show is all about giving, and McDonald's is jumping on board with the announcement that they'll be offering free Wi-Fi starting in 2010. Not sure the first thing we'd want to touch after scarfing down a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit is a laptop keyboard, but hey, free is free.

Speaking of giving, The Hangover giveaway is still going on! Send us your best (but most likely worst) hangover stories to the404 [at] cnet [dot] com before Friday for your chance to win!

Sick of AT&T service? Tired of seeing Luke Wilson in those misleading coverage ads? You might want to join up with Chokehold, a grassroots movement to overload the AT&T network this Friday. We're not condoning this type of behavior, but Luke really is annoying in those commercials.

All this plus more stories and a great calls from the public segment!

Blend up some baby food

Those little jars of baby food can add up quickly, making you want an alternative. The Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker provides one. It offers one compact unit that can handle every part of the process of preparing baby food, from steaming to blending, as well as acting as a warmer and a defroster. In order to make sure that your baby gets all the vitamins and flavors of the food, the baby food maker steams vegetables, fruits, and meats in less than 15 minutes. It then purees and blends foods to an easy-to-eat consistency. You can also use the … Read more

iPhone apps to help parents keep tabs on kids

Parents' jobs are extremely difficult. From time to time, it's nice to get a little help from technology to make the job just a little easier. That's why I decided to sift through Apple's App Store to find applications that help parents monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of their kids. Some of the apps listed below are for young children, while others are designed for teenagers. But in the end, this roundup is for any parent with an iPhone.

Get parenting help from the iPhone

Baby Monitor Since some baby monitors don't have the kind of range parents hope for, the Baby Monitor iPhone app will deliver.

Baby Monitor provides a relatively simple experience. You can place the iPhone next to the baby while the application is open. You'll also need to input a phone number. When the baby starts making noise, the Baby Monitor places a call to the number you input into the application, so you can listen from another phone. It's a great way to monitor what your baby is doing, but beware that it costs $4.99.

Baby Soothe Sometimes getting your child to go to sleep can be a difficult task. That's where Baby Soothe comes in.

Like Baby Monitor, you'll need to put the iPhone next to the baby for it to work properly. When you do so, you can pick from several different sounds that, according to the app's developer, will help your baby go to sleep. You can choose from relaxing water sounds, like a waterfall or rain. You can also choose a heartbeat option, which mimics the sound babies will hear in the womb. The app also features white noise, like fans and static. All the app's audio features high-quality sound that should appeal to most babies. Even better, it's affordable at just $0.99.… Read more

How to baby-proof a disaster zone

When Samsonite released design guidelines for its second annual Baby Travel Design Competition earlier this year, it suggested the following categories: transport, sleeping, safety, feeding, playing, bathing, and changing.

Last year's winners ranged from carriers and strollers to a sleeping bag and floating humidifier. Samsonite recently announced its eight winners out of the almost 1,700 entries submitted from 78 countries in 2009, including a bassinette, all-in-one bag, and baby air seat. Notably absent was one entrant: a disaster-ready pod out of Iran that manages to be both brilliant and bizarre.

First, the specs. As noted via the designer'… Read more

Why is baby crying? This app translates

In the classic Simpsons episode "Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes?", Homer's long-lost brother Herb invents a baby translator. The baby cries, the machine announces its meaning (in Danny DeVito's inimitable voice) in plain English.

Seventeen years later, there's an app for that. Cry Translator promises to identify the "five distinct cries" made by infants.

In other words, you no longer have to wonder if your ankle-biter is tired, hungry, mad, stressed, or just bored. It's like Stanza for crybabies.

My first reaction: That's cheating! My second reaction: Why wasn't … Read more

Can autism really be detected by voice alone?

The Lena Foundation, whose new autism-screening tool hit the market in September, claims that parents who use the Lena System are now able to determine with 91 percent accuracy whether their child is developing normally, has autism, or has unassociated language delays.

The home kit, which includes a digital audio recorder, an outfit to hold the recorder, and a questionnaire about the child's development thus far, costs $699. (The one-time language and autism screen, on the other hand, is $200.) The foundation, which develops technology for the screening of several types of language delays and disorders, says the kit … Read more

NBA star's Twitter ID crisis rebounds on him and the site

Glen "Big Baby" Davis of the Boston Celtics is a lovable soul. Until he doesn't get a contract.

At least that was the conclusion reached by the more than 1,600 people who followed him on Twitter at twitter.com/bigbabybball.

Despite being a popular member of the Celtics roster, the team hasn't offered him a contract. So his alleged Twitter page tweeted July 14: "Man I love Boston, this is where I started my career! But sometimes you forget that this is a business!!!!"

Which he then followed up with: "celtic have … Read more
