I remember the very first Woo Audio headphone amp I heard five years ago; it was the $520 WA-3, and they still make it. The little amp made a strong impression because it so radically improved the sound of Grado headphones. That amp transformed Grados, gave them more soul, more body, and sweetness. I've reviewed a number of Woo products over the years, but the new WA-234 Mono is a very different beast. First, it is as the name implies, a monophonic design, so you need two amps for stereo. The other big difference is that these tube amps … Read more
Camera360 Ultimate for iOS is a photo editor with tons of fun and unique tools, but the interface can be confusing, and it lacks features for sharing the finished product. You can save your completed projects to your photo library and share from there, but it would be much better if it had the options found in other photo editors (more on this later).
Tons of interesting photo features Camera360 is not your run-of-the-mill photo-editing app. It does have common features like rotate, crop, brightness, and contrast, but where it truly diverges from the rest of the pack is in … Read more
Integrated amplifiers have been around for decades, but they've quietly become a viable alternative to AV receivers, thanks to TVs that now offer extensive switching capabilities and more integrated amps that include an optical audio input.
That's the context in which we looked at the NAD D 3020 ($500 street), along with several other integrated amplifiers that include an optical audio input. The D 3020 is the best of the bunch, with terrific sound quality, a solid feature set (including built-in Bluetooth) and a handsome, compact design. The D 3020 also sports a dedicated subwoofer output, making it … Read more
Does it make sense to buy fancy headphones?
If your answer was a rousing "yes!", you'll be glad to know that "fancy" doesn't have to mean "expensive" -- not today, anyway. While supplies last, DealFisher has the Logitech UE 6000 noise-cancelling headphones for $99.99 shipped. They list for $199.99 and sell elsewhere for at least $140.
These are factory-refurbished headphones, but DealFisher says they're in "new/excellent" condition and is going so far as to offer a full 365-day warranty. In other words, although Logitech typically would … Read more
When I first reviewed the 1964 Ears V6 custom in-ear headphones earlier this year I not only loved the sound, I got the distinct feeling the company tries harder to please its customers than other custom in-ear makers. For example, 1964 Ears V6-Stage headphones are sold with a longer warranty (two years) and lower prices than the flagship models from more established high-end headphone competitors. 1964 Ears doesn't make universal-fit in-ear headphones, all of their designs are custom-molded to your ears for the best possible fit and maximum isolation from external noise. The headphones are hand-crafted by 1964 Ears … Read more
Beats Electronics is once again a completely free company.
HTC announced Friday that it has sold off its remaining 25 percent stake in Beats Electronics for $265 million. The move comes after HTC sold back the other half of its stake in Beats for $150 million.
Things sounded much different two years ago. HTC acquired a 50.1 percent stake in Beats in 2011 with plans to incorporate its audio technology into HTC products. Although it did so, neither HTC nor Beats seemed all that pleased to be working together, leading to rumors that the audio company, started by rapper … Read more
Video Trimmer and Audio Cutter has the right idea but the wrong execution. With too many ads, lackluster performance and crashes, it hardly seems worth the fight to get it to work.
This app's basic interface lets you choose a starting point and a stopping point for your video or audio and then trim off the rest. It will let you choose where you save the video, but you have to know the exact name of the file folder. It doesn't show you your destination options. It also doesn't show you the video once you've finished, … Read more
Once you have iOS 7 installed, you might be surprised to see a standalone FaceTime icon on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Beyond making it clear that the device can make video calls, it also makes it easier to use FaceTime for audio.
With iOS 7, you'll be able to place audio-only calls through FaceTime, eliminating the need to watch minutes (but you'll need to monitor data usage if you're not on Wi-Fi).
The process for making an audio call via FaceTime is nearly identical to making a video call, with the lone exception being a phone … Read more
Right, the name attracts a certain amount of attention, but Schiit is no joke. The California-based company made its name with the very first product, the little Asgard headphone amp, which I enthusiastically reviewed on this blog back in 2010. Since then more Schiit headphone amps and digital converters won raves from me. This time out we're back to the Asgard, in its revised Asgard 2 format. The price is still $249.
A few months after iOS 7 was first shown off by Apple at its World Wide Developer Conference, the wait is finally over. iOS 7 is now available for iOS users around the world to download, install and start putting to use.
With the number of changes Apple included in iOS 7 there's bound to be questions regarding how to use old and new features alike. But that's what we're here for. Below you'll find a roundup of posts covering every possible aspect of iOS 7 we think should be covered; all of which will show … Read more
