New iPad ranked top tablet by Consumer Reports

The latest iPad has a new fan, namely Consumer Reports.

Apple's latest tablet scored the highest ratings among its rivals in a report out today from the consumer publication.

The new iPad was commended for its 5-megapixel camera, battery life, and 4G coverage through Verizon Wireless. But it was the high-resolution screen that earned the sharpest praise.

Citing the detail and color accuracy of the Retina Display, Consumer Reports said that the screen "establishes a new benchmark in excellence" and is "the best we've seen" on a tablet. Specifically, the publication found that the … Read more

Samsung store in London follows Apple's lead

Samsung has opened a new retail shop in the U.K. And it seems to feature some rather familiar design ideas.

According to Engadget, which visited the Oxford Street store in London earlier today, a host of Samsung's popular mobile products are on display, including the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Note, and Galaxy S II. In addition, the shop is currently in the process of training staff, so they can be well-versed on just about any question that might be posed by visitors.

Interestingly, Samsung's shop is right around the corner from one of Apple's London … Read more

Dutch court: Samsung can't ban iPhone, iPad from store shelves

As badly as it wants to ban the iPhone and iPad from sale, Samsung is having a difficult time getting it done.

A judge in the Netherlands' District Court of The Hague yesterday ruled that because Samsung is governed by FRAND (fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory) licensing rules, the company cannot seek a sales injunction on Apple mobile devices that it claims violate essential patents it holds. As long as Apple shows that it wants to negotiate for use of the patents, the court ruled, Samsung must try to reach a deal.

Dutch Web site Webwereld.nl was the first to … Read more

Apple's iPhone fails to close gap against Samsung in China

Apple is having an exceedingly difficult time trying to match Samsung in China, a new report claims.

According to Bloomberg, which obtained Chinese market share data from research firm Gartner, Samsung's line of smartphones has more than triple the market share the iPhone has in that country, nabbing 24.3 percent share, compared with Apple's 7.5 percent.

Apple has been selling the iPhone through No. 3 carrier China Unicom since late 2009.

Apple started selling its iPhone on China Telecom's service last week. China Telecom is the country's second-largest carrier with an estimated 129 million … Read more

Samsung: The new iPad is no work of art

Author's note at 11:31 a.m.: I apologize for hitting the wrong Note here. As many of you have pointed out (thank you), Samsung is referring here to its pen-wielding big sister, the Galaxy Note 10.1, not the smaller, but equally pen-wielding, Galaxy Note phone version I had in my hands at CES. Please forgive me for being a very dumb bottom this morning. I have rewritten below with, hopefully, a slightly more alert brain.

Just when it seemed as if Samsung would no longer declare Apple the brand of a bygone age, the company changed its … Read more

Apple asks for governing rules on mobile patents

Apple has asked a European standards body to set new rules on how essential patents are licensed in the mobile industry.

The iPhone maker sent a letter to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in November requesting member companies set reasonable royalty rates and terms on patents related to essential mobile device functions. The Wall Street Journal, which discovered the letter yesterday, was first to report on it.

Apple is currently embroiled in bitter patent disputes with a host of companies around the world, with each side claiming the other violates patents they hold. Chief among its adversaries is Samsung, … Read more

Samsung's Bowl ad claims it can help Apple fanboys break free

Many of the deeply affected have been standing in line waiting to see how Samsung would attack Apple in launching the Galaxy Note.

So here we were, during the Super Bowl, with Apple fanboys and fangirls lining up in San Francisco.

They have been tempted to desert the fold before in this campaign.

Finally, in this ad directed by Bobby Farrelly, the Apple faithful lose the faith.

Just one look at the Galaxy Note--yes! it has a pen! what a magical revolution!--and they break ranks and utterly lose their mentalities.

If you thought Farrelly's movies enjoyed their over-the-topness, … Read more

Samsung's Super Bowl ad: Farrelly brother, Apple-baiting?

Might there be some brand new Samsung product hanging from Cameron Diaz's hair during the Super Bowl?

I ask this apparently spurious question because Samsung's Twitter feed has been glistening with tease about its forthcoming Super Bowl spot.

First the company tweeted: "We're telling fans first: Next Sunday we launch a device so revolutionary only an ad in America's biggest game can do it justice."

A mere hour later, its more than 333,000 faithful were stroked and stoked with: "To make our first ever SB ad as noteworthy as the #GalaxyNote itself, … Read more

Samsung to Apple: Camping out for a new phone isn't Woodstock

The gloves are off.

But it gets cold in Philadelphia, so you need those thumbless gloves to stay warm and keep texting on your iPhone.

This is just one of the sweetly spiky scenarios that Samsung has just released in its attempt to kick Apple fanboys when they hurt: in the ego.

There are two new Galaxy S II spots, following on from a faintly flat little teaser released last week, in which Samsung man showed off his, um, turn-by-turn directions.

These latest two offer a little more face-scratching truth.

In one spot, Samsung pokes at "creative" people … Read more

Did Apple blow $100 million in its legal fight against HTC?

Apple may have spent $100 million in its legal assault against HTC over what it believes is ripped-off technology used in Android mobile devices.

That's according to Dan Lyons, who posted on his blog today about the rumored $100 million price tag for legal expenses for Apple's first set of claims against the company.

A representative for Apple wasn't immediately available to comment to CNET on the figure.

If true, that represents a significant cost--even for a company as cash-rich as Apple--for little gain. After more than a year of legal wrangling, the U.S. International Trade … Read more
