Google wants a Web that looks very different from today's. Instead of more or less static sites, perhaps spiced up with a new comment popping up on your Facebook page, Google wants Web apps that are indistinguishable in performance and sophistication from native programs like high-end games or Photoshop.
But Google faces a tough choice: What's the best way to get to that future?
The promise of the route it's trying to take, a technology called Native Client, shines in the sophisticated online photo-editing tools for Google+ that launched this month. The problem is that Native Client … Read more
An exponent of artists like Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Ladytron, Little Boots has some pretty big dancing shoes to fill. But the 29-year-old British synthpop singer (born Victoria Hesketh) is definitely on her way. Her sophomore album "Nocturnes," following on the heels of her UK Top 5, Gold-selling debut "Hands," finds Boots working with DFA Records co-founder and production visionary, Tim Goldsworthy, Hercules and Love Affair's Andy Butler, and Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford, on nine tracks so danceable they'll wear out your boogie shoes.
Using "Nocturnes" as our North Star, … Read more
In case it wasn't clear before, a Google decision has shown the writing is on the wall for plug-ins such as Java and Silverlight that for years have been used to extend what browsers can do.
Starting in January 2014, Google will ban all but the most widely used browser plug-ins in favor of programming methods that use standards built directly into the Web, Chrome security engineer Justin Schuh announced in a blog post Monday. And those plug-ins will be barred "over the coming year," he said.
Most Chrome plug-ins (not to be confused with the lighter-weight … Read more

According to Travis guitarist, Andy Dunlop, making an album is akin to building a bonfire. You can pile on and arrange the kindling wood as artfully as you like, but you still need a spark to ignite it; and with a little luck, you'll get it. Multimillion-selling Scottish quartet Travis has already had a lot of luck in the U.K., scoring three Brit awards and 18 Top 40 hits. But in the U.S., it's been a tougher road to stardom with only two alternative hits: 1999's "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" … Read more

Now Marano, who's appeared in major films "The Jacket" and "Superbad" and TV shows "Without a Trace," "Dexter," "Back to You," "Sarah Silverman Program," and "Heroes" is a senior in high school and is exploding in popularity, herself, as Ally Dawson of hit Disney series "Austin & Ally."

Adobe Systems on Tuesday announced the availability of its $10-per-month subscription for Lightroom and Photoshop and released Lightroom 5.2, which expands and refines the software's photo-editing tools.
More details on Lightroom 5.2 are below, but here's how the new subscription works. It's called the Photoshop Photography Program, and it's available only to those who have a license to Photoshop CS3 or later. Unlike the discounted promotional price for its broader Creative Cloud subscription, which costs Creative Suite customers $30 per month for the first year and then $50 afterward, the Photoshop-Lightroom subscription price doesn'… Read more
