Yep, Apple owns iPhone5.com now

If there were any lingering doubts that Apple sought to control the iPhone5.com domain, a recently updated domain record shows that that's exactly what happened.

The Whois database record for iPhone5.com, updated on May 21, now shows "Apple Inc." as its registrant, with registered servers that go back to Apple.com. Even so, the site continues to not go anywhere.

The move comes a week after the closure of an investigation by The World Intellectual Property Organization regarding the domain name. Apple had taken aim at an Internet forum site residing at iPhone5.com, which … Read more

Apple's need for iPhone touch panels could hurt other vendors

Apple will need a huge number of LTPS, or low-temperature poly-silicon, screens to maintain the Retina Display resolution on its next iPhone, a move that could make life tough for its rivals, according to DigiTimes.

Citing the usual "Taiwan-based supply chain makers," DigiTimes said the next iPhone will will require the use of LTPS technology to offer a resolution of 326 pixels per inch. LTPS displays can achieve higher resolutions than those possible with regular active-matrix LCD screens.

But production of such screens will be in short supply. Manufacturers LG Display, Japan Display, and Sharp combined can produce … Read more

Has Apple taken control of iPhone5.com?

The World Intellectual Property Organization has concluded its look into Apple's complaint over the iPhone5.com domain, which seems to suggest a victory for the iPhone maker.

Earlier this month, iPhone5.com was a forum site, created in February 2008. Its copyright statement clearly indicated that it was "not endorsed, sponsored, nor otherwise affiliated with Apple" and that it was created "for the sole purpose of entertainment and knowledge."

And that seems to have gotten under Apple's skin, hence the complaint to the WIPO.

The minimalist WIPO filing page now declares the case "… Read more

Assuming the sources are on the money, production of the screens could rev up next month, the Journal added. The most recent reports say Apple will … Read more
