What's next for Flickr video?

I chatted last week with folks at Flickr to catch up on the video hosting service it launched less than a month ago.

It's proven to be popular, despite a small uprising from a portion of its diehard users that was later quelled with Yahoo-subsidized doughnuts. Flickr wouldn't share the exact number of videos that have been added, but the site is teeming with them. A casual advanced-search for videos with a space in the title yields more than 124,000 clips, but the true number is likely to be significantly larger.

Flickr's splash into the video … Read more

Microsoft hopes new photo tool will boost Windows

Microsoft likes digital photography enthusiasts as customers, and on Thursday plans to release a free new utility designed to keep them wedded to Windows.

Pro Photo Tools is geared for photography professionals and enthusiasts, and its first notable feature is the ability to geotag photos, or add geographic information showing where the picture was taken. Geotagging is an onerous chore with today's technology, but camera makers are working to build it into cameras, and it can pay off down the road.

That's because geotagging, done well, enables people to find photos by searching for the word "Paris&… Read more

Pinhole photography celebrated

I wish I would've remembered this a little sooner, but I was reminded late yesterday by photographer Corinne Schulze's blog that yesterday was Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. That doesn't mean that you're off the hook, it just means that you have more inspiration in the form of the images participants shared this year. There's even one by Professor Andrew Davidhazy of the Rochester Institute of Technology. His process is a little complicated, but if you want to give pinhole photography a try, the WPPD site has some links showing how to make your own pinhole … Read more

Photobucket shares interface, matches Flickr

Photobucket, is making a significant change aimed to weave the widely used photo-sharing site more tightly into the Web 2.0 fabric.

The company is releasing an application programming interface (API) for its site, said Chief Executive Alex Welch. That means that ordinary developers will be able to build more sophisticated services around the Photobucket services and content.

Photobucket already made its API available to commercial partners, but now ordinary coders will be able to get access by signing up on the Web site, Welch said. The company is announcing the news in conjunction with the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco. … Read more

Killer Download: Share your photos with Web albums

I take a lot of pictures with my digital camera at birthdays, family gatherings, and other events, so I'm always on the lookout for new ways to share the photos. As new programs hit the scene and older programs evolve over time, my favorites change because of various factors like ease of use, number of features, and of course, the king of all reasons: price.

One of the best ways I've found to share pictures with friends and family is to make them as accessible as possible by creating Web albums. With the right software, you can lay … Read more

Photography may be older than you think

For years now, it generally has been accepted that the earliest known photographs made using easily repeatable techniques (photogenic drawings) were made about 1839. Some photographs had been made earlier, but they required extremely long exposures and were considered impractical. However, the world of photography might soon be turned on its head if a photogenic drawing that was recently removed from auction at Sotheby's turns out to have been made in 1802, as one photographic historian thinks it might.

David Schonauer, editor of American Photo magazine, has a detailed account of the story on the State of the ArtRead more

Duck, duck, blog

At the intersection of lightheartedness, bath-time fun, and photography, you will find the Duck Show. A creation of photographer Colleen Fletcher, the blog transports you into a world inhabited by rubber ducks. They mark the passage of time by celebrating holidays, rocking out in Vegas, and having adventures around New York. They even star in film stills.

As you might expect, this all started in a bathroom--a very large bathroom apparently. Ms. Fletcher decided to decorate that bathroom with rubber ducks, began a collection, and as she puts it, "A couple of years and 333 ducks later, I found … Read more

Secret Service hates photography?

I don't know if it's silly that this surprises me, but apparently London's police aren't the only ones who have a problem with photography. According to a report on wusa9.com, the Web site of a local news station in Washington, the United States Secret Service asked a man outside the stadium of the Washington National's baseball team to delete a photo he took that included one of the stadium's security checkpoints. President George W. Bush was in the stadium to throw the first pitch for the team's opening day.

I know that … Read more
