X-Rite unveils ColorMunki

X-Rite has announced three new color management products today under the name of ColorMunki. Two of the new products--ColorMunki Photo and ColorMunki Design--will be available later this month and include Spectrophotometers and software to let you make color profiles for monitors, projectors, and printers. The third, called ColorMunki Create, won't be available until June and includes a Colorimeter instead of the fancier Spectrophotometer that ships with the other two and doesn't include printer or projector profiling. If you create a color profile for a device, then software that offers color management, such as photo editing software, can more … Read more

BenQ shows off its slimmest 24-inch panel yet

The Taiwanese PC maker calls it the "world's slimmest 24-inch LCD monitor," boasting that it measures just 2.44 inches at its thickest point.

The V2400W design, which was inspired by a B-2 Stealth bomber, uses an advanced Rapid Heat Cycle Molding (RHCM) injection technology to achieve its slim profile, according to BenQ. This new technology allows for more flexibility in molding non-traditional shapes and designs.

Introduced as a premium product, the V2400W sports a mirror-black finish with slick touch controls. It will feature HDMI (with HDCP), DVI, and VGA connectivity options, together with full 1080p high-definition … Read more

Slimmer and eco-friendly LCD monitors

Taiwan-based AU Optronics is planning a new generation of widescreen LCD monitors designed to combine the best of media and computing functions.

The new line has video-tuned 1,920 x 1,080 resolution ideal for full-HD playback, as well as a thinner and power-saving design. Its 24-inch panel is just 14 millimeters thick, compared with conventional 35-millimeter offerings, while consuming up to 50 percent less power--enhancements were brought about by reducing florescent backlighting units. The company says this does not come at the expense of screen brightness and contrast.

According to its press release on Fareastgizmos, these 16:9 aspect … Read more

Study: Bigger computer monitors help you get things done

Attention, employers: buying larger computer monitors for your workers might help them get more work done.

That's according to a study done by researchers at the University of Utah. They tested how long it took people to edit documents and copy spreadsheet information over an 8-hour period, meant to represent a typical work day. Three different setups were used: a computer with an 18-inch monitor, one with a 24-inch monitor, and one with two 20-inch monitors. (Note: The study was commissioned by NEC, which produces monitors, but the lead researcher said it didn't matter what type of monitor … Read more

Quick reaction by companies to ricin and other health scares

.

What happens in Vegas could be contagious; but don't worry, despite the recent ricin scare on the Strip, your chances of dying from exotic poison or a bio-engineered infection are pretty slim - even at the buffet.

Still, companies are betting their R&D budgets that the government will ante up to protect you from the toxin de jour. Their odds are good. Universal Detection Technology received a rush of orders for its ricin detection kit after a man was found in critical condition in a Las Vegas motel room with a case of suspected ricin poisoning.

LG's Flatron monitor: Super-high contrast?

The tech stork just dropped off LG's new 19-inch L197WH monitor, which the company claims has a contrast ratio of 10,000:1. That's a pretty spectacular number given the highest we've seen previously came from LG's 5,000:1 L226WTQ.

The extra 5,000 points is the result of LG's "f-Engine" image processing system. Apparently it's utterly brilliant at making blacks blacker and whites whiter--like Daz washing powder, but in monitor form. Other specs include a 2ms response time, 300cd/m2 brightness, 1,440x900-pixel native resolution and 170-degree viewing angle.

Dongle connects second display to PC

If you hate having to change the video card in your PC to support multiple displays, here's a way that can help save the hassle. The Logitec LDE-SX010U, which is expected to be released in Japan in mid-March, is a USB-to-DVI dongle that lets you connect additional monitors to your computer via the USB 2.0 port.

The Logitec dongle supports a maximum 1,400x1,050 pixels, which is the standard native resolution for most 19-inch panels. Up to six displays can be connected to one PC, according to Akihabara News, though a more powerful computer is recommended as … Read more

Traackr organizes media from all over the Web

I stumbled upon this really simple one stop service last week and it's something I think a lot of casual media creators will find useful. It's called Traackr, and it lets you keep tabs on what's going on with the media you're sharing on the Web. You can plug in your accounts from several popular services including YouTube, Flickr, MySpace, and Dailymotion, and then have the service track usage for each using handy charts and indicators. Think of it as Google Analytics for Web sites you don't own.

Attack of the hydra-headed displays

Whether you're talking about a day trader, wannabe security guard, or voyeur extraordinaire, it seems that some people just can't get enough computer monitors to stack together. The latest example of this obsession comes from the "Paramount Parabolic Multi-Monitor Display" made by Humanscale.

Accommodating up to eight displays, the system tops even CineMassive's six- or seven-screen "MasterPlex" line. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this set-up--which apparently provides only the rack and mounts, not the actual LCDs--is that it requires no tools. Additional monitors just "snap into place," Dvice says.
