Q&A with Charter VP: Your Web activity, logged and loaded

Charter Communications is planning to monitor its customers' Web surfing and then, anonymously, display relevant advertisements.

What the third-largest U.S. cable operator, headquartered in St. Louis, Mo., probably wasn't planning on was a privacy-fueled Internet backlash that began a few days ago after it began notifying customers of its intentions. For its part, Charter describes its behavioral profiling plans this way: "innovative new technology in the field of online advertising enables Charter to provide you with an enhanced online experience that is more customized to your interests and activities."

The disclosure led to a flurry of … Read more

Hands-on with Samsung's Dual Display 2263DX

Crave knows two screens are better than one. Many of us use twin 19-inch displays, while the real high rollers rock twin 30-inch Dell 3007WFPs. We don't need to--but that's just how we roll. So you can imagine just how intrigued we were when Samsung showed us its Dual Display 2263DX, a 22-inch monitor with a second 7-inch monitor poking out of the top.

It may look odd, but Samsung says it lets users have their favorite applications running uninterrupted in a totally separate, always-visible desktop space. It's right, too: We can definitely see ourselves running common … Read more

Get a 22-inch widescreen LCD for $179.99

It's rare enough to find a 22-inch LCD for $200, but $179.99? That's a steal. And that's TigerDirect's price on the refurbished Gateway FPD2275W. Best of all, there's no rebate: $179.99 is your out-the-door price (plus about $17 for shipping).

Spec-wise, the monitor seems pretty solid. It offers a native resolution of 1680x1050, a 5ms response time (important for games, movies, and other fast-moving video), VGA and HDCP-compliant DVI inputs, and even a 4-port USB hub. CNET rated the monitor pretty highly, but found fault with its short warranty.

Unfortunately, the warranty on … Read more

Because everyone needs 30 monitors

Who knew that there would be an arms race in multiple monitors? First there was the six-screen "MasterPlex," then the eight from the Humanscale's hydra-headed display set-up. But all have been dwarfed by the 30 screens of 9X Media's top-end model.

The massive apparatus is customizable for as few as two monitors at a time, though that would hardly be any fun. Perhaps the most curious thing about this set-up--other than why anyone would need it, for personal use anyway--is the claim that it's an "ergonomic solution," as mentioned by BornRich. Because as … Read more

'VitalJacket' wears heart on your sleeve

Usually when clothing and technology intersect, it's for purposes of entertainment or communication, even when physical activity is involved. But the "VitalJacket" made by Portuguese company BioDevices wants the combination to focus on your health.

Rather than rely on cumbersome devices that need to be worn on the arm or strapped to the chest, this smart shirt tracks your heart rate and electrocardiogram levels with built-in technologies. The VitalJacket comes in two versions, according to Coolest-Gadgets: one that stores data on a removable SD card that can be transferred to a computer, and another that features "… Read more

Samsung tarts up LCD monitors

Samsung may eventually put its monitors on a crash diet but, for the moment, it's dressing up the ones it has now in an effort to attract potential suitors.

The Korean company is debuting its "Touch of Color" line of desktop LCDs, which it describes in terms usually reserved for fashion reviews. Looking "more like a beautiful piece of art than a monitor," it gushes, they feature "a deep ruby red infusion that complements its piano-black, glossy finish." (Note to Samsung: If you're touting appearances, please provide better photos.)

Not totally superficial, … Read more

Get a Soyo 22-inch LCD monitor for $199.99

It's pretty rare to find a 22-inch LCD selling for below $200 with no rebate required, but that's exactly what CompUSA has this morning: the Soyo DYLM2284 for $199.99. It's a new unit, not a refurb, and did I mention there's no rebate?

The monitor features VGA and DVI inputs (alas, no HDMI), built-in speakers, a 5ms response time (great for games and movies), and a native resolution of 1680x1050. Ground shipping will run you about $15.

So, how's the picture? Alas, reviews are as rare as a 22-inch LCD for under $200, though … Read more

Samsung says OLED monitors coming next year

Sony's teased us for a bit with its impossibly thin, 11-inch organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TV, and finally brought it to the U.S. this year. Now it looks like there will be more to choose from in OLED TVs next year. Samsung SDI says that by 2009, not only will it have OLED panels for larger TVs, but also for monitors and notebook displays, according to a report in Digitimes.

The report quotes Samsung SDI's VP of mobile display marketing, Woo-Jong Lee, who says that Samsung SDI will be able to produce 3 million panels in 2009, … Read more

Agilewaves dashboard displays green building's health

Green-building company Agilewaves and a California school have flipped the switch on a computer display that's meant to give life to the school's eco-friendly features and enhance its science curriculum.

The prekindergarten-through-eighth-grade Nueva School in Hillsborough, Calif., has incorporated a number of green features, including a 30-kilowatt solar array and a "living roof" of plants that lessens water runoff and insulates.

Agilewaves makes Resource Monitor software, which can display how the building is performing as a whole. The idea is that creating a visual representation of the green building in action will drive changes in people'… Read more

U.K. military drivers get road safety monitors

An article on News.com reports that the U.K. military is running a test program to monitor driving habits. The test program uses a box from GreenRoad Technologies which records 120 different driving maneuvers and can alert the driver if they are driving poorly. The device uses a row of LED lights that show green for a good driving maneuver, and red for poor. Click here for the full article.
