Photos: Nvidia's weekend gameaway

Nvidia is hosting a weekend-long party to celebrate the release of Electronic Arts' Crysis, and gamers from around the San Francisco Bay Area are spending all hours competing for prizes and respect in a desolate warehouse at the former Alameda Naval Air Station.

Several hundred gamers are expected to attend and compete in tournaments playing Crysis, Team Fortress 2, and Madden NFL '08. Nvidia also unveiled a new processor for notebooks during the event at the Area 51 Events Center, which included a look at the state of the PC gaming industry.

For gamers who run out of steam, the … Read more

New stylish Nokia 8800s

Nokia released two new 8800 models today, both of which put the previous silver Nokia 8800 to shame. DNA art company launches lip paintings

The company that makes art from DNA has turned a bit more Andy Warhol for an encore.

DNA 11, an online company that creates personalized oil paintings from the buyer's DNA or fingerprint, introduced a new way for people to buy art--by puckering up. In partnership with cosmetics company MAC, DNA 11 now lets people buy a personalized painting by sending in a print of their lips, or what are called Kiss Portraits. (It's very Marilyn Monroe.)

DNA 11 has been selling on-demand paintings of people's genetic code for years. Its art work has even appeared on … Read more

Pleasing the gods, one miracle at a time

When it comes to paying tribute to deities--or invoking them for unsavory political purposes--mankind hasn't exactly been slacking. This makes life especially rewarding for San Francisco conceptual artist Jonathon Keats, whose work often focuses on conflicts between religious precepts and science. Operating under the cover of agnosticism, Keats devises projects that force-fit theology, nature, and technology into weird forms of cohabitation. He has attempted to create God in a petri dish and has created abstract art for extraterrestrials and pornography for houseplants. Keats knows the projects are nutty. But there's just enough rationality in them to get you … Read more

A guitar controller even Ozzy could love

The guitar wars just got kicked up a notch. The craze fueled by Guitar Hero and Rock Band has led some big bands to lend their names to custom controllers made by ArtGuitar.

KISS, Ozzy Osbourne, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Pantera will have their images and logos emblazoned on the "AG RiffMaster Guitar Controller," which Slippery Brick describes as a full-size Peavy guitar that's been turned into a game controller. The limited editions are going for $399, so these aren't for the kids. For them, there are other, less dangerous alternatives.

'Spore' fans, don't fret: It's still coming next spring

Thanks to my good friends over at GameSpot, I can now finally let out my breath: Spore is going to come out next spring.

For nearly two years, Spore, the next title from The Sims mastermind Will Wright, was all people in the video games industry could talk about. Well, OK, maybe not the only thing, but one of the major ones.

Then, suddenly, people stopped talking about it as its launch date slipped and slipped and no one knew when, or even if, it would come out.

But according to GameSpot, Wright went on BBC Radio Five Live yesterday … Read more

'Dirty Art Car' is beautiful art

AUSTIN, Texas--With all the high-tech in evidence at Maker Faire here, it's hard to believe that one of the most amazing things I've seen was purely analog: drawings in dirt on the side of a car's window.

This is Scott Wade's Dirty Art Car.

Most people, when they see cars with dirty windows, just use their finger to write "wash me" on the glass.

But Wade is taking that basic idea and turning it high concept. He takes a drawing tool and etches wonderful, detailed drawings into dirt on the windows of his simple … Read more
