Apple patent filing might be iPhone 2.0

The iPhone isn't even here yet, but a newly revealed patent filing could shed light on Apple's next move.

The filing--which we noticed on Unwired View directed by Crunchgear--shows what an iPod Nano would look like with a touch screen on the back of the player. The touch screen interface looks quite a bit like the iPhone, with a QWERTY keyboard and phone pad dialer as options that can be brought to the surface, suggesting that the next iPhone might be smaller and thinner than the current plan.

iPhone accessory juggernaut cranks up

That loud creaking noise you hear is the sound of enormous floodgates opening: The era of the iPhone accessory has arrived.

Not even a full day has passed since we mentioned that the first cases for the iPhone were on the market, and already two more are supposedly rushing our way from an outfit called BeyzaCases. Gear Diary says these models come in leather and a lot more colors than the first batch.

Now can we please see the phone before we get any more accessories?

Helio Ocean may be days away

I don't know about you, but I'm more excited about the Helio Ocean than Apple's iPhone. Call me a heretic if you must, but I like a phone that has a QWERTY keyboard and 3G support but doesn't cost an arm and a leg. So, I was stoked to see a rumor that the Ocean will be launched as early as May 21.

The Boy Genius Report said the Ocean will be in "general release on May 21" and "limited/internal/partner release is five to eight (days?) prior." I called Helio, … Read more

iPhone may not be here, but cases are

Well, it's about time. It's been nearly five months since Emperor Jobs anointed the iPhone, and only now are we seeing its first cases.

After all, it took only about 5 minutes for a Bluetooth headset to come out. Such is the perverse order of events in the world of high tech, where accessories can often precede the star attraction. But we digress.

EBcases has released two new lines, the eNovo iPhone Clip and the eCopilot, according to Textually.org and iPhoneFreak. The Copilot is offered only in "Rouge," but the eNovo case comes in a … Read more

If the iPhone morphed into a watch

If anything can be said of the people at SMS Technology, it's that they don't waste any time. Only two months after the appearance of their "world's smallest phone"--a Dick Tracy-style watch communicator--the Australian company has already filed for a next-generation version that some say looks like an iPhone for the wrist.

Gadgetell reports that plans for the "M500," as it's called, have been filed with the FCC and that it includes "all your basic phone functions plus SMS texting, audio, video and Bluetooth." It also alsos feature a … Read more

iPhone snapshot: Harbinger or mirage?

OMG, an iPhone photo!

Apple fanatics who can't wait for the June launch of Apple's new iPhone got a little treat to tease them over the weekend: a photo allegedly taken with an iPhone popped up on Flickr.

The photo has since been taken down, but the data included with the images suggests it was taken with one of the as yet unreleased devices, and the specs seem to match with what Apple has promised for the iPhone. The photographer is apparently an Apple employee, but many bloggers noted that the EXIF data posted on Flickr can be … Read more

Readers, start the iPhone rumor mill

So, what applications would you like to see on the iPhone or Apple TV?

Apple will develop new software applications and features for the products over time, and make those available for free, it said Tuesday during its earnings call. It's all related to some complicated accounting mumbo-jumbo that annoyed MacBook users back in January and February when they had to pay $1.99 to unlock a faster Wi-Fi chip they didn't even know they had.

By telling people the new stuff is coming up front--and by waiting to recognize a portion of the revenue from each sale--Apple … Read more

iPhone document reveals little

When it comes to Apple's iPhone it appears that the more we know, the less we know. Engadget was able to get its techy hands on a Q&A document sent to Cingular/AT&T employees. We can't confirm whether it's legit, but it almost reads like a script for an episode of TV's Lost. In other words, it tells us more of what we knew already while throwing us only the occasional bone. Meanwhile, the main details (such as an exact release date) remain wrapped in secrecy.

Still, there are a couple of … Read more

AT&T: iPhone still on track, tests 'good'

No, we still don't have a specific launch date for the iPhone. But we do know, at least according to a senior AT&T exective, that it won't be delayed beyond the originally promised month of June.

"Our expectations are good. Our testing has been good," AT&T Chief Operating Officer Randall Stephenson told Reuters. "The iPhone is on target to launch in June."

Apple has said it's cleared the decks to focus on the already-storied phone, putting aside other high-profile projects including the release of its next Mac operating system. … Read more

Sling, Apple: Streaming music to iPhone?

Sling Media CEO Blake Krikorian says he has spoken to Apple about his company's ambition to stream iTunes music and video to the upcoming iPhone. It's unclear, however, what Apple thinks of the plan.

Krikorian made the comments after participating in a panel discussion at the National Association of Broadcasters conference yesterday but declined to offer details about the talks or say whether Apple welcomed such a plan. He did say Sling Media "would love to support" the iPhone.

"I think the question for them is going to be how are they going to phase … Read more
